Can AI play a role in airport operations – specifically in the determination of deicing logistics and execution? Regarding deicing operations this is made simpler with the proliferation of video surveillance throughout the airport and on the ramp. One example is the visual inspection of aircraft control surfaces using existing video feeds. AI analysis of the video feed of the aircraft at the gate would provide near real-time updates on the status of the control surfaces of the aircraft and aid in determining the need for deicing. The decision always comes down to the flight crew, but AI as an additional tool to help aid in faster and more accurate deicing decision-making will support better operations flow and safer operations for all.
