What are the most effective ways to learn about reservoir engineering in petroleum and energy engineering?

1. pay attention in school, especially the reservoir engineering classes 2. Do NOT sell your textbooks if you plan to stay in the industry. Reference them frequently. I have a youtube video on which RE books to read @Yogashripradhan 3. Take short courses throughout your professional career in reservoir engineering 4. Start teaching reservoir engineering concepts to young professionals. You retain 90% of what you teach.

Books, like Tarek Ahmed. Heriot Watt University's Text books on res Eng, Res. Simulation, and Production Technology are also quite nice

Fluid properties and phase behavior are essential basics that should be mastered first. Follow those with material balance and drive mechanisms noting the relative importance of drive mechanisms in different reservoirs and formations. Well testing would follow after understanding the previous areas. Pay special attention to assumptions made in well testing and fluid flow in porous media. The media that fluids flow through have a major influence in predicting production.

Reservoir is Quite interesting subject in petroleum engg.If you can play with math and physics then reservoir engineering can be more interesting & game changer. You can learn reservoir engineering in many ways but understanding the concept along with math and physics makes it more interesting. I followed some steps to learn reservoir engineering. 1.In the beginning follow a petroleum geology book & then go for reservoir Enggg book of ur interest. I always recommend Tarek Ahmed for reservoir engineering. 2.Follow SPE papers to understand the concept and practical use cases ( highly recommend) & Discuss with whom u can. 3. Attend the Reservoir Engineering webinars/ conference where u will get to know about the latest technology and trend.

I'd suggest the combination fundamentals of reservoir engineering by L.P Dake and Reservoir Engineering handbook by Tarek Ahmed, as they're very complimentary, teach similar topics with different level of detail, and also have topics not unique to both. So a combination of both text would be great, in my experience

IHS Harmony is a wonderful software that has so much power and depth it would take you years to use it to its fullest capabilities. It starts by being a production database (connect to Enerdeq or your db) to view well, reservoir, or field level production histories. Next, you can perform production forecast analyses through many options (traditional DCA, type well, WOR). If you then have reservoir pressures and wellbore data you can continue to use its volumetrics, MBAL, surveillance, simulation, and lift optimization modules. It also comes with an economics calculator to justify performing WOs.

Perhaps, there are good suggestions for names, in my opinion, if you can do it by hand you can do it by any software from any vendor. You will then understand the boundaries and limitations of those tools.

I would like to suggest you from my experience. 1- Be part of relevant Discussion forums on LinkedIn, SPE Connect, or certain websites. 2- SPE eMentorship program 3- Read technical papers and try to approach authors if you have any questions 4- Mentor someone 5- Try to pass by relevant events happening around you

Conducting studies on actual reservoirs: analyze the actual performance using increasingly complex tools—simple to simulation where appropriate

1- Find peers who share an equivalent amount of curiosity as you 2- Explore journals like OGJ, WorldOil, JPT 3- Keep room for error in the solution as no one has been to the actual reservoir down there. Everything we learn about it has approximations.

At early career stage for an engineer it is recommended to achieve a Master Degree from a top ranked university, in my experience Texas A&M with professors like Dr. Lee, Dr. Blasingame, it is valuable for all your professional career. At mid-career stage it is recommended to attend international conferences like ATCE (Annual SPE meeting), webinars, short courses,certifications and even do self-study in some free time from web-based platforms (like coursera.org). At senior level I found interesting to mentor young engineers since it is a good chance not only to teach but also to learn different perspectives that arise from creative young students and engineers now days (example perform a reservoir simulation assisted with machine learning).
