If you have contacts in the same area in which you are trying to advance your own skills, find the contacts which are willing to work with you. In my industry of litigation support video production, I worked with other video production companies who did the same type of work I did. What I learned was that overhead was very high for office space and the like, but we very rarely have clients come to our offices, or do we work with clients in our actual offices. Therefore, I was able to learn the specific sub area of litigation support video that I wanted to focus on, and I picked up the good habits of the other entities I worked with, while not stepping on their toes, or trying to encroach on their focus areas.
