In my experience, the DCS uses modular PLC components and powerful PC stations that support system expansion at all levels and meet business future needs. However, the expansion by adding HW can increase the cost and the system's complexity. To mitigate this cost, the system should have: ? Spare IOs ? Additional free memory and CPU capacity at PLC ? Server/client architecture ? PC stations under the max limit of the configuration and the license ? Latest proven HW and SW components ? Available connections/nodes in all the networks ? Available capacity in the elect power ? Physical space Consequently, taking this expansion into account in the earliest project phase gives the flexibility required to expand with min cost and configuration.
