What are the most effective ways to engage your stakeholders in sustainable development goals?

Map your stakeholders carefully. Using materiality analysis identify their impact on your sustainability values. Know who is a collaborator in your values, who is a threat to your values, who you must influence. Don't forget your clients. Design a strategy for engagement with each unique stakeholder. The strategy must be a co learning strategy to build on opportunities, minimise risk and avoid patronage. Approach your stakeholders with a clear vision. Co create your engagement. This is a way to a win win for all.

Truly listening to the concerns and fears of your stakeholders to find relevance to your cause, and always stick to the facts.

In my experience,nothing can add to your credibility as engaging your stakeholders in the right way , and the first step is in mappings your stakeholders efficiently and effectively, by high engagement of your internal stakeholders and direct/indirect beneficiaries, that will give you giant perspective and rich stakeholders map

Your first stakeholder is you - identifying why you really care about the SDGs and/or CSR matters. And it matters beyond because the customer pressures me to care or the industry requires me to care. Long lasting, sustained change starts if the leader truly sees how accomplishing CSR activities or implementing priorities is connected to your vision for the company as well as your vision for your own personal brand. If it doesn't matter and you're just doing it because of the pressure others put on you, it will crumble like a house of cards as inauthentic and greenwashing. Today, we need authenticity and deep conviction.

I would say that the biggest challenge of this task is the translation of the contribution of a organization towards sustainable development and the more general expressed SDGs. It’s important to understand what impact the organization in question has on different sustainability areas and what financial impact these areas have on the organization. In other words a double materiality analysis is important. After that you couple your targets. For this standards like the new ESRS or ISO 26000 could be interesting tools.

It remains a challenge to connect SDG and companies relevant activities and then to align throughout several companies. Sectoral approach could help here. For environment, there is also planetary boundaries. For product, there is life cycle assessment, social and environmental.

Collaboration is key. As the saying goes, if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together. This is a key driver to making an impact. I'm impressed with the work that the One for All Alliance is making in the WASH sector - three different water organizations coming together to measure and monitor work and progress to jointly accomplish a lasting impact in the water sector. Once we see that those working in the same space as us as collaborators, not competitors, the greater likelihood we will be a part of the actual solution rather than a roadblock.

This collaborative approach harnesses diverse perspectives, innovation, and collective wisdom to design impactful, locally-relevant initiatives. It fosters a sense of ownership, commitment, and shared responsibility, making progress towards sustainability a shared journey, not a solitary pursuit.

This helps you see how well you've done, what value you've added, and where you can improve. You can use tools like SROI, IMP, or BIA to understand the impact of your CSR work better. It's all about getting insights to do even better in the future.

We must listen to them so that the own the project. Ownership enhances participation and accountability that leads to sustainability of the project.

Look for ways to take risks to gain credibility through third-party endorsements and the hard work of certifications so the industry can see your commitment to the work you are doing.

Use the celebration as an opportunity to share stories of the positive impacts achieved through your CSR initiatives. Highlight the real-world changes and improvements that have resulted from collaborative efforts. Publicly acknowledge and thank stakeholders through press releases, social media posts, or dedicated sections in your annual reports. Emphasize that celebration should not mark the end of engagement with stakeholders but rather a milestone in an ongoing relationship. If a company publishes a CSR report alongside financial reports, it could be a great way to engage more people. Of course, customers, employees, and affected communities can usually be readily engaged through celebratory messages in the media... so why bother with such reports? Well, it might also be used in the same way as press releases when it mentions the traditional stakeholders, such as drawing attention to the efforts of employees or the feedback of beneficiaries. For another, it allows various stakeholders the chance to engage with the company, such as potential investors who share an advocacy, regulators who are mindful of such reports, and the rest of society who may be interested to get involved in SDGs via examining CSR reports.

We have found that many of our stakeholders who are not from the affected communities tend to gain a deeper understanding of the devastating impact of environmental injustice when they witness it first-hand. We arrange outings in collaboration with some our of closest and most long-lasting community engagement partners. They have taught us what residents would consider to be disrespectful, and how to build trust. But for our sustained relationships with our community engagement partners, our stakeholders would not be allowed to safely come into the neighborhoods and get to know the residents on a personal level.
