What are the most effective ways to develop workshops?

I agree with many of the views given by the other esteemed colleagues. I just want to add one point: before identifying purpose and goals of the training, be clear who you are going to be training and what their learning needs are.

Defining your 'why' is an extremely important element when it comes to designing workshops or other learning experiences. Keep your 'why' at the center of all the other aspects of your design i.e. audience, topic, content, and material. Consider it a rigorous introspection exercise - where you are pausing at each step and asking yourself why am I doing what I am doing? For instance, why have I chosen activity 'A' to teach 'B' topic? Why it should be a virtual workshop and not in-person or vice-versa? Why am I choosing this specific material for this workshop? All these questions, and there will be more, help you tie your objectives, content, and methodology together and make it a seamless experience for your audience and yourself.

In addition to defining clear learning outcomes and objectives, it's essential to consider the diverse needs and backgrounds of your participants when designing your workshop. Tailoring the content, activities, and delivery methods to accommodate various learning styles, preferences, and prior knowledge levels enhances engagement and effectiveness. In developing workshops, participant profiling, goal and objectives assessment, venue evaluation, and facilitator's competencies are key areas to address in a bid to achieve effective "workshopping". For example, remembering to request for the list of expected participants and profiling them will inform the choice of methodology to be applied, depending also of the goal/objectives of the workshop in relation to type of audience. facilitator must also consider how/if the proposed training methodology can be efficiently executed, considering the number of participants. Methods for training a large number of participants may differ choice method for a smaller group.

Whenever I have developed and designed a workshop, it has always been as per the audience. What does your audience need is the first step to curate an effective workshop. Understanding people and knowing what they want can lead you to better results as you are offering a solution to them instead of your product.

The most crucial thing which has the greatest power to decide your workshop's success is knowing your audience correctly. A technical term to define this is "Need Analysis". Knowing your audience's preferences makes your workshop 50% done. For instance, you cannot include movie references to people who are not even interested in those. It doesn't mean that you have to design your workshop for the preference of every person in the room but you can design it for 75% of the majority people's preference and design the rest 25% which is unique and aligns with everyone's choice. It could be real-life scenarios, nostalgic memories etc.. Need Analysis may seem to be a big task, but remember this "A precise need analysis saves a lot of time!"

Plan a method which can only remind them of you whenever they think, see or do anything. One such way is that summing up your entire workshop's takeaway into an Acronym that can be easily related to their day to day activities. For instance, I've handled a workshop of conflict resolution where I designed the entire module as a bus ride scenario and the takeaway of the session was "4 STOPS" which includes STOP EGO, STOP OVERTHINKING and such. In this way, whenever they see a bus stop, it reminds them of me and whenever I revisit the same place, the audience would approach me saying that they remember the 4 STOPS till now. This is one of the methods of how you can plan your delivery and facilitation. "NOTHING IS AS RELATABLE AS REALITY"

1. Have a crisp and interesting opening - I usually do not touch content with that. 2. Assess the attendees at the earliest, with any predefined theories or methods which you're comfortable with. By doing that you would know what will make them be curious and listen - I use the ABGD method which my facilitator taught me. 3. Never convey too much to the attendees. Stay focused on the key deliverables on which you started planning the session with - I keep the content, questions, activities and everything aligned with the deliverables mostly. 4. Q&As are always a 2 way learning. Either you tell they learn, or they tell you learn and sometimes they ask you both learn - I never compel myself to show I know! 5. I close with a recap always.

Develop strong facilitation skills, encourage questions, and foster a positive atmosphere. Evaluate effectiveness of the training workshop - conduct surveys and assessments to gather data to help identify and improve the workshop
