What are the most effective ways to design a product with optimal performance?

The first step of Product engineering is to understand the need of the customer/ user. Then to do a market research and understand the value gap of products already present in the market. Then to identify the technology trends to address the gap.

Design a top-performing product by: Clear Purpose: Define a clear goal for the product. User-Centric Approach: Understand and prioritize user needs. Simplicity Rules: Keep the design simple and user-friendly. Quality Materials: Use durable and reliable materials. Thorough Testing: Rigorous testing ensures optimal performance. Feedback Integration: Gather user feedback for continuous improvement. Scalability: Design for potential growth and scalability. Efficient Manufacturing: Optimize production processes for consistency. Energy Efficiency: Prioritize eco-friendly and energy-efficient features. Adaptability: Consider future trends,design for adaptability.

This is most important part without knowing customer's pain point we are just wasting the efforts, the customer interactions, surveys , values the result will provide to customer plays a vital role. Also, how the team is proactively working on fixing/providing the solution for the problems matters alot.

The first and the most important step in Product Development Engineering is to Define a Problem Statement. What are you trying to develop, what problem will you solve, who is involved needs to be considered. To support the problem statement / definition, the following key steps are necessary 1. Identify the Stakeholders. 2. Collect data from the VoC. Conduct surveys, research, get feedback from peers 3. Analyze the studies and create a Problem statement

Be careful to not let the tool become the project. If the tool isn't helping solve the problem, change the tool...don't change the problem.

In my experience, choosing the right tools and methods for product engineering is crucial for achieving optimal performance. There are many tools and methods available, such as [CAD], [CAE], [CAM], [DFM], [FMEA], [DOE], etc. However, not all of them are suitable for every product or project. I always consider the following factors when choosing the tools and methods: the complexity and novelty of the product, the cost and time constraints, the quality and reliability standards, the customer and stakeholder feedback, and the availability and capability of the resources.

Using numerous prototypes, especially to showcase functionalities, is highly beneficial. They don't need to be in the final technology; techniques like milling or 3D printing are suitable. Prototypes quickly reveal flaws and encourage creative thinking through physical interaction with new ideas. Testing various concepts is wise, as the insights gathered can later aid in rapid pivots. The most effective solution should then be refined through iterative development. This approach highlights the value of experimentation and adaptability in product design, ensuring innovative, user-centered outcomes.

In my discipline, we have to select the topology, case style/size, power handling capacity, and countless other parts. Many parts of these are filtered out through the specifications, which facilitates the rest of the process since our remaining workflow is standardized.

At this stage, it's essential to constantly consider cost-benefit analysis. The projected sales volume dictates the technologies suitable for product manufacturing. Investing more time in design to simplify production is always worthwhile. Utilizing Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) analyses can lead to product cost reduction during the design phase. Fewer parts mean lower production, assembly, and quality control costs, and less room for errors. This approach emphasizes efficiency and cost-effectiveness in product development, ensuring a streamlined and economical manufacturing process.

In my opinion, sticking to the Design Principles is a must to allow for smoother, efficient growth in the Product Development cycle. 1. Brainstorm the ideas to develop concepts 2. Use concept evaluation techniques (Pugh Chart, +/- chart) to evaluate and finalize the concept 3. Develop the design further towards DFM and DFA, finalizing the manufacturing process, tolerances, material and stack ups involved 4. Establish a plan for the next steps

One thing I’ve found helpful is to follow the design principles that guide the product engineering process. These principles are based on the best practices and lessons learned from previous projects and products. Some of the design principles that I follow are: [form follows function], [keep it simple and stupid (KISS)], [less is more], [design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA)], [design for sustainability (DFS)], [design for user experience (UX)], etc. These principles help me to design a product that is functional, efficient, elegant, feasible, eco-friendly, and user-friendly.

Important use cases/test cases should be noted down before hand only. The sanity of application development , new releases should be done properly before actually going live as it could backfire in important situations when something doesn't work as expected in actual live scenario. Any performance tuning, recommendations, testing must be done before to not face any issues in live time. Tracking of bugs should also happen in timely manner, have seen scenarios there is no fix and have to use with bug until its fixed. So proper followups are needed to get things done in timely manner.

Test and validation in my area involves the ordering of engineering samples from our fabricator which will then be tested to grants us preliminary perspective on how the device will perform within our initial internal specifications as well as against our customers' specifications or the desired catalog specifications. We can then move forward to full qualification on the next step.

Among the methods, some are more fit for early stage validation or for more innovative concepts, while others are better suited for incremental improvements. Make sure to pick the right method for testing the desired effect. Another aspect to consider is cost-efficiency of the prototype needed for testing.

In product engineering, there is always room for improvement. Even if the product meets the specifications and requirements, it may not satisfy the customer or the market. That’s why I always evaluate and iterate my product using various techniques, such as [benchmarking], [feedback], [review], [analysis], [optimization], etc. These techniques help me to compare my product with the competitors, collect the opinions and suggestions of the customer and the stakeholders, assess the strengths and weaknesses of my product, and enhance the features and functions of my product.

In my team, we often experience that due to prioritisation of features, and scoping within time limits, many ideas are put on backlog. The thing with backlog is that it keeps growing and is a challenge to manage the roadmap with team that is passionately creative. One thing that has worked well for us, was to use a continuous tracker counting amounts of requests for certain features and events or problems that relates to a certain feature. Those are continuously factored into the prioritisation of feature list and drives that specific feature to top priority list.

Once the product is successfully launched and running, a Product Engineer gets the perfect platform for learning. All the steps implemented to develop and launch has come fruitful. Product Engineers should keep an eye on the performance of the launched product, seek feedback from the manufacturers or end users without any hesitation and even embrace the shortcomings of the product. This is the best way to learn what you have tried, worked hard on and implemented.

Product engineering is a dynamic and challenging field that requires constant learning and growth. There are always new technologies, trends, and demands that influence the product engineering process. As a product engineer, I have to keep myself updated and informed about the latest developments and innovations in my field. I also have to learn from my mistakes and failures and use them as opportunities to improve my skills and knowledge. I use various sources and methods to learn and grow as a product engineer, such as [books], [journals], [blogs], [podcasts], [webinars], [courses], [mentors], [peers], etc.

Based on my experience, the best methodology for creating and developing a new product or improving an existing product is what we call APQP (advanced product quality planning). If you are not familiar with it, it is recommended to learn it and use it effectively. At its heart, it uses significant auxiliary tools and techniques that are used by a multidisciplinary (or cross-functional) team to create a new product or improve an existing product.

Optimal is often misunderstood as "satisfying all constraints". Every point within the feasible design space satisfies all constraints, but is not optimal. The optimal solution lies on the edge of the design space, and anything beyond is infeasible, i.e. a failure. This is why failure is a necessary aspect of identifying optimal...push a design beyond it's parameters and see if it fails. If it doesn't, it's suboptimal.

I also have to communicate effectively and efficiently with them and use tools like [email], [phone], [video conferencing], [project management software], [slacks], etc. to share information and ideas, and to coordinate and manage the product engineering process.
