In my perspective and experience, tone and register are essential for business translation. This is something directly related to knowing the audience who's going to read the material. In Spanish translation, especially for US Spanish speakers, assigments usually come with the "warning" that text should keep the original meaning but structures and lexical items should be simple, clear, and readable for less educated people. One of the effects that this has is that I have noticed that in certain circunstances business-related terminology needs to be converted into phrases rather than using the actual term, which in normal conditions would be understandable by people with expertise.

I agree with the previous comment about staying true to the original and having a sound knowledge of context. Avoid repetitions too to make sure the translation sounds more natural and reads easily. Proof read your work after having stepped away from it before submitting the final draught. An example of context for me would be translating a car themed document and the English reads "Open all windows and doors" translation into french window= fenêtre and door = porte and so the literal translation would be Ouvrir toutes les fenêtres et portes. However, in contextual French, the windows are vitres and the doors are portières giving a more natural and readable (to a French speaker) translation "Ouvrir toutes les fenêtres et portières"

Having done technical interpretation to Indian workers on heavy tools I noticed that there was a language, a terminology used by the local workers different from the standard one which had to be replaced with the latter in order to make sense to the Indians. In fiction things are different.

Also, don't forget that today- especially in Business writing- the formal style used in past years has left the spot for a more dynamic and less wordy one. Writing it has shifted from the bureaucratic style to a more neat, concise and formal way. Although if your audience is expecting from you a well done job, do not forget to set the right context! Avoid being too formal or you may give the impression of being too arrogant or pompous!
