Go and say hello, get them talking about themselves - make it easy and relaxed. As others approach, smile and welcome them into your conversation. Be the person who greases the wheels of social interaction. Forget about finding the person who can help you - that's too much pressure. If you don't find them, you'll think the event was a waste and you won't go to the next one. That will only hurt you.

Offline reputation ! It's refreshing to see offline brand reputation being talked about in the world of internet. My POV : Brand reputation depends on great service and experience given to the customer. The better you make your client/customer feel, better word of mouth you get. For example: I was always skeptical about services and speed of SBI banking. But the manager of my campus branch introduced me to the banking App. Now Its been 7 years but I've never visited branch for any purpose, all my banking needs re taken care by App. And personally I've recommended SBI to almost 50 people and one of my previous organisations has moved entire salary account to SBI. If nothing is going for you, stick to basics. +ve word of mouth is key.

Do not ignore traditional media. Write columns for publications in your niche or publish a book. Whilst many personal brands are built digitally, being a published author still has reputational value. If you do not have the presence yet to get a column with well recognised publication start with a local magazine or newspapers. Radio stations, especially local ones, are often looking for experts to host weekly shows and community TV stations are also always looking for content to fill their airwaves.
