From my experience, a good way to provide feedback is in a predetermined timeframe, with an existing performance plan, with objective data, concrete examples of instances of good and bad work. And a defined plan for enhancements.

Follow up the feedback by letting your supervisor know that if such a situation arises again you’d like to be notified immediately that your actions were not appropriate instead of waiting for a future review.
