There is a lot of pressure on educators to spend X number of minutes on a subject, or to show progress on this or that standardized test. These are important... to cover the BASICS, to make sure students are learning the bare minimum. But I encourage educators to set loftier goals than that. What do you think your students need to learn in order to function in the society they will be running in a decade or so? Start with the goals. Then find the way to measure them. There are lots of indicators besides tests. How about recording observations of spontaneous use of a new skill? How about asking students to teach a skill to others to determine their level of mastery? There are plenty of ways to measure... start with what your goals are.

Measurement is not an alternative to judgement. Whether it is quantitive or qualitative information that is gathered in order to evaluate the impact of school improvement efforts, leaders need to beware of the the pitfalls in measuring performance or impact. Jerry Muller warns of the Tyranny of Metric and this should resonate with school leaders in an education system where judgements of what children understand and the effectiveness of schools are reduced to grades. Grades are a mechanism to measure and an attempt to bring order to complexity, measurements demand judgement: - Whether to measure - What to measure - Significance of measurements - Whether rewards or penalties go with results - To whom to make the measurements available

I strongly recommend looking into a couple of leading thinkers on the collection and analysis of data. First, Tony Bryk and others at Carnegie focused on an approach called Improvement Science. Their work showed that strategy is often based on data and results that come in long (often longer than annual) cycles and therefore often delay results and improvement. They clearly outline strategic cycles for rapid improvement that impacts students quickly. "Street Data" by Safir and Dugan also write about how to center equity in data collection and analysis to ensure that those closest to the issues being studied (students) are respected and heard as a core part of the process. Both are critical resources.

How will you share your results and insights with your students, staff, parents, board, partners, funders, or media? What are the key messages and stories that you want to convey? Don't forget the students in your reporting! Students crave feedback. Let them know how they're doing, either individually or as a group. Celebrate their successes with them, and challenge them to "beat their own scores." The only person they are competing against is their former selves. :)
