While code reviews offer the surface level check that code is performing as intended, it more importantly sets the tone for your team's standards and how you interact with each other. There are hundreds of ways to solve even the most trivial problem, and when a better solution presents itself, how your team goes about addressing that different viewpoint is arguably more important than the slight performance improvement which could be realized by implementing a different pattern.

One the most important software design reviews in my experience was reviewing design choises made against non-functional requirements. Especially if no ADRs or they are just statements 'will do this' without reasoning. It may reveal a lot of unconscious assupmtions made. E.g. once a did a review of active-standby decision with 3 seconds switchover SLA where architects relied on TCP\IP connection timeout (default is 30 seconds) nd assumed standy PostgreSQL will start instantly having SATA disk as a storage.
