A Skill inventory can be certainly be an essential tool while auditing one's skill. This can be done with the help of a Skill Matrix. Skill Matrix is generally used by organisations to gauge the skills of a team on a specific project and act accordingly. But, it can also be used by an individual to assess their own skills and identify their existing skill gaps. It is rather easier to measure the tangible professional or hard skills than the intangible personal or soft skills. One needs to document and constantly analyse challenging situations to get a clear metric on soft skills.

A skill inventory is key when auditing our career, but what often gets overlooked is an inventory of our strengths. Our strengths and our skills are not necessarily the same. For instance, we can have strong sales skills, but that does not mean we possess the drive to succeed - a quality that ultimately will give the competitive advantage.

Here's my take: (1) Free first, then get fancy – Platforms such as LinkedIn Learning or Skillshare have online assessments to evaluate varying skills. Take what’s free first, then get fancy. Find out what jobs excite you. What do you like doing? There are several online tests or tools that help you see what jobs fit your likes. They can tell you if you're into helping people, making art, or solving puzzles. This can guide you to work you'll love and do well in.

Here's my take: (1) Take inventory – what skills do they have and enjoy leveraging daily? StrengthsFinder is an incredibly helpful tool to leverage. (2) Informational interviews – Identify professionals working in their areas of career interest and interview them across the factors/roles/responsibilities that matter most for the success of their roles. (3) Where’s the intersection? – From the inventory results and the insights gained from the informational interviews, where does your client see that intersection coming together? The career roadmap will have its own detours, so stay focused on your natural skills, along with your eagerness to learn, the journey will be well worth the wait of the destination.

It goes without saying that creating S.M.A.R.T goals is definitely better than having generic goals. But it is also true that not every goal can be transformed into a S.M.A.R.T one. Breaking down such goals into smaller chunks of actionable tasks is a clear alternative in place of forcing yourself to transform your goal into a SMART one. It is also better to keep track of our short term and long term goals and review them time to time to make sure they align with our overall Goals.

Alright, I am a huge fan of combining the SMART & SWOT frameworks for goal setting, so let’s roll with that approach: (1) Is it possible? – If yes, then jot down that specific target you are aiming at. Outside of the focused letters of the SMART acronym, also identify what might be in the way of you accomplishing it (i.e. your own perceived strengths, weaknesses, obstacles/opportunities, and threats to desired outcomes). (2) Micro-chunks – Break down the steps into bite-sized action items. You will be stunned at how powerful that approach is. Think baby steps as to how micro you want to get with this. (3) Review, Adjust, Pivot, Repeat – Make it a habit to perpetually review status and celebrate success.

An action plan helps you start moving toward your career goals. It's a to-do list with all the steps you need to take, the things you need for each step, and when you plan to do them. This plan keeps you focused on your job goals.

Here’s my take: (1) Refine & Define – Using the SMART framework mentioned, get as clear as possible on exactly what it is you want to achieve. Ex: “I want to obtain x by x (date).” (2) Go Micro to Get Macro – Break down steps into bite-sized actions. I have learned this to be the most important part of the process; everything else is not even close from my perspective. Ex: “I will start by writing for 5 minutes every morning at 6:00am.” From my experience, you will be shocked about how transformational building (and committing to) this 300 second-per-day habit can do for your life. (3) Pivot & Adjust – Review your goals and micro steps at least weekly (shoot for daily). Track your progress and celebrate your successes. Refine and repeat.

I recommend to clients that getting feedback is really helpful. Ask a trusted friend, colleague or Manager what your top strengths are, or all for feedback on your work or a particular project. Psychometric assessments can be useful as a first step in understanding your strengths or preferences, MBTI or Strengths profile are good for this.

I have learned (the hard way) to keep things incredibly simple when it comes to career audits, leveraging the framework examples shared above: (1) Get a blank piece of paper (2) Draw a line down the middle (3) Put a smiley face on the top-left – looking over a job description of the career position that fuels you, jot down the experiences you’ve had that match each line item. (4) Put a frowny face on the top-right – do step #3, but for ones you still need development or experience on. (5) Create a plan built upon your strengths (the left side) (6) Create a plan built upon your development opportunities (the right side) (7) Take radical ownership of both
