Desoldering pumps are a great option that not many know of. Often mechanical, but sometimes coming in electric versions, these are the goto for picking up solder from the joints once you heat it up with the iron. One thing I learnt about these pumps from my experience is that getting a certified, brand affiliated one is way better over the cheaper options available. Often times the latter ones turn out to have low or no vaccum efficiency and are not even air tight in nature.

Desoldeirng can be a frustrating process, often resulting in failure if done for the first time. One method I have found to be helpful while trying to desolder delicate ICs is to scrub the soldering tip gently with a coarse sponge semi-wet with water, and then heat up the joints using the iron. It will pick up the soldering and the sponge will make it better for absorption after each use.
