Sometimes, people think running an organization resembles the public sector. Still, I believe an effective organization needs to be run as a business., with metrics and clear KPIs.

My Succession Grid is simply 5 Cs . . . in this particular order. Character Calling Curriculum (life experiences) Chemistry (and yes, that's a thing!) and, Competencies. All too often we recruit in reverse, reading a static CV about skills, then we zoom interview, and if there's an iota of Chemistry, we might ask some life story color commentaries and even, the big question, "what do you feel called to do in/with your life?" Then we hire and hope to God, literally, that we've hired someone of maturity and integrity that won't sewer us. So, I start with Character and this is assessed through references, those worked for, with and those whom they've supervised. If the first four Cs are in place, then the 5th, competency, can be taught.

At this stage it's also incredibly important to not only acknowledge the legacy of the outgoing CEO but create space for the incoming CEO to be able to put their unique stamp on things and be comfortable deploying the full extent of their talents.

Usually NPOs board is involved with onboarding new CEO. Whatever agreement was made with the new CEO regarding organization's demands and needs should have 90 day reinforcement. NPOs due to lack of resources and some instance corporate knowledge don't govern their organization like a corporation with operating models and organizational change tools. This is much needed. If a new CEO doesn't uphold their agreement for the NPO demand, such as relocating if new leader is from another area, should be communicated as leading to separation. This way any strong candidate will understand the seriousness of the demand and can withdraw interest if any of the demands, from the NPO, they would not be able to fulfill.

Communicate with current stakeholders regarding their feedback on the health of the organization and what’s needed in a leader to move the organization forward. Inclusion at this level of engagement may increase acceptance and buy-in of the new leader. Make it fun and create a word cloud to define what the new leader will represent and demonstrate. Title/Position doesn’t necessarily = leadership. A values-driven candidate with integrity will champion the good of the organization and its stakeholders and build a legacy of growth and development. Search outside the box! New perspective and energy may be just the prescription to ignite innovation and inspiration within an organization.
