1. Never make ERP implementation an IT driven project. Make functional leaders responsible. 2. Define and catelogue existing business processes and then define desired changes after detailed consultation among stakeholders 4. Send core teams to places where successful implementation has been done, preferably with SI team. Define SRS document after site visits. 6. Have strict clauses and penalties in contract of SI to restrict frequent changes. 7. Best outcome can be achieved if SI resources and company resources work side by side from same premises. 8. While software teams work on development, define data migration templates. 9.Insist on proper documentation of system configuration, customized code etc must never be ignored.

My experience gathered across multiple businesses in different sectors suggests the following:- - Business Objectives need to be crystal clear even before any planning for ERP Software selection is done - Top Down approach works generally well across companies where management gives clear and timely directions to the workforce regarding the need for ERP Implementation - Setup of Core team of capable resources including department HODs mandatorily as they will be the ultimate enforcer of Management vision regarding ERP - Well-qualified/experienced ERP Implementation Specialist (may be from the company/outsourced) who can deal with ERP System Integrators and put up the Company's requirements in clear terms.

One important aspect to keep in mind while evaluating the suitability is the quality of “data interface” between the 2 systems - existing and the new ones. Very frequently this aspect is not given due importance at the timenof project implementation and once the users start using the new systems they experience the data interface issues. This greatly impacts the return on investment you expected from the new systems

Indeed, they are several ERP solutions on the market. SAP is dominating the market worldwide, not that it’s the best solution, but this is a fact. SAP is a good solution for big businesses. They are other options for smaller ones which are more appropriate.

The cloud is the future of information systems, particularly for those who don’t have endless resources to hire and retain top-tier IT talent. ERP helps to streamline business processes, gain visibility and free up the time and resources. The company could have handled the growth without an ERP system, but we would have been forced to hire a lot more people.

Continual communication among and across the many disciplines needed for such a project allows management to pivot as needed to stay in step with the overall journey map. Remember for multi national organizations this can take years to complete so test/learn and adjust as needed. Communicate, communicate and communicate!

One practical challenge to keep in mind while setting up project team is that we need to include people who are good at “negative testing”, as well. It is about having people on board who will make sure that the new systems not only do what they are supposed to do BUT also the new systems have been designed to ensure that the organisation CONTROLS have been well built in.

One practical point related to user training is that it is always better to err on the over training side. It is because due to reduced attention span, the amount of training absorption in one comprehensive training is very limited. Multiple rounds of training helps in cementing the new ways of working.
