The first and most important step (other than defining the "problem" and "solution") is to know your "WHY". Why is this business idea so important to you? Why does it align with your values? Why will it accomplish your goals? Once this is crystal clear, you can course-correct, no matter the change in circumstance. Imagine sailing from Brisbane to Sydney without a motor. You are at the whim of the prevailing winds. Tacking back and forth, changing direction a little off course, only to keep correcting your course using your compass. At times, you won't be headed directly south. That's where your goal lies... Your business and business plan are the same - the end destination is the goal. Your "WHY" is the compass.

One needs to craft a flexible business plan which is critical for adapting to changing circumstances. to build an adaptable plan: Establish a clear vision and mission, providing a foundation for decision-making. If you don't have conviction, don't bother others trying to convince them of your value while simultaneously attempting to convince yourself you have the answers/solutions they need. If you can do this in a few sentences, you can stay on track and put you plan into motion.

One thing that I have found helpful is to plan in 12 week periods. In addition to other benefits, this allows you to assess your progress more frequently and get feedback from your team before setting the plan for the next 12 weeks. This is when you incorporate new ideas that allow you to adapt to changing circumstances. So you aren't constantly changing during the measurement period, but are still able to make adjustments 3-4 times during the year.

I strongly feel when you are making a business plan you should have answers for- Why-why you want to do what you are doing ? Gone are the days of your "5 year plan". Now most businesses are focused on a 6 month and one year plan and change can happen at any time. The world and the economy are unpredictable so you need to plan for that. Check your plan quarterly, evaluate it with your team to ensure you are on track but to also ensure that it stays relevant. Checking it regularly gives you the opportunity to see how you are doing versus the goals you set out. Did you miss the mark? Is your team on track towards the goals that were set out? These people can add data you can't see and give you feedback no one else can. After the first trusted advisor, a great businesses will add other advisors. It's very important you have the right advisors for the right time of your business. Don't use your parents accountant they had for 20 years just because, go seek out your own. The same goes for lawyers, coaches, IT providers, board members - keep asking yourself, are these the right advisors for now?

Feedback from employees and customers is super valuable. Listening to that feedback is essential. Acting on it is just plain smart.

Employees, and especially the leadership team, needs to understand and remember the purpose of what they are doing. Far too often people get so far in the weeds on a task that they forget why they are doing it. It is very valuable to often take a step back, both when things are going well and when there are troubles, and ask yourself the question "Is this moving us closer or further from this goal in our business plan?"

I was asked by a National Guard to develop a strategic plan. They had one that was done a couple of years earlier - it was 84 pages long and never looked after it was developed. I asked the Adj. General if he could use a plan that was the length of the constitution - 4 pages. He agreed. They developed a 4-page plan that they review at every staff meeting.
