I think it’s extremely important to remember that coaching is less about teaching and more about listening. It’s about understanding the individual strengths and weaknesses, as well as strengths and challenges, of the individual, and then helping them down the path to ultimately achieve the outcomes they desire. Further, I think most modern sales people and teams are far more deficient in the areas of psychology and behavior. This leads me to emphasize those specific areas to improve performance, and not so much the hard skills, tools, systems, and processes that most people coach and train on.

Effective sales coaching is all about bringing the person being coached along with you. Show them how things can be better if done differently then praise and reinforce what they are doing well. Then don't forget to revisit and show them how they've moved forwards by actually implementing the new skills that they have learned.
