Biohazards are microbes that can cause harm to the personnel working in the lab. The biorisk assessment has become essential in the post-pandemic world. Usually WHO templates are used for biorisk assessment. The pathogens are categorized based on pathogenicity, infectivity, transmission, and availability of treatment and prevention. After taking into consideration all the parameters the pathogen is categorized into different risk groups. The higher the risk group the higher the containment level/measure is required. After the risk assessment, the next step is to reduce the risk and the best practice to do so is to train the laboratory staff. The assessment and training is a continuous process.

Every lab should develop its biosafety manual (BSM). Because BSM is not something that works on the principle of one-size-fits-all. Every lab has different personnel with different competencies, different engineering controls, different geographical locations, and performing different tests/experiments. Therefore every lab has to perform its biorisk assessment and develop its one manual that caters to its needs. BSM should address the plan for the risk assessment, classification, containment, decontamination, waste management, transport, incident reporting, emergency response, training, and audit. This also requires to appointment of certified or competent personnel as a Biosafety Officer to check the compliance of the BSM.
