The depth and effort of a supplier assessment should depend on the materiality of that supplier and their category to the core processes and outputs of your/the client’s business. I would strongly recommend a materiality analysis prior to locking in any approach. In my experience a mix of qualitative and quantitive assessments is most desirable when assessing critical and key suppliers. as supplier culture, partnership practices and desire, and strategic direction plus renumeration approaches of their own staff and post sale support structure are critical to the success of a supplier just as much as their ISO certifications

One thing I have found useful is having a risk category aligned to companies process. Effective assessment can only be possible if the party ensures there is Policy, Process, Control, Governance in place. Its important for the organization to educate the party on these to ensure standards are met

If it is a low risk proposition, I highly suggest keeping the evaluation criteria simple and easy to use and thus don't spend budget on those vendors that are low risk and/or low costs to partner with.
