The first question I usually ask is how they prepare for a negotiation; it is crucial to see the modus operandi and it is a good indicator of their level of experience in negotiating. In addition, a challenging or very demanding negotiation process is always a good question. Lastly, I also ask which is their biggest win in a negotiation or alternatively a case in which they tried to achieve a win-win situation with the counterpart.

You could also show an example of a negotiation and get them to rate how successful they think it was, and how it could have been improved. Overall, it really depends on the position they are applying to and the type of negotiation they will be dealing with. If you have a candidate that will be dealing primarily with email based negotiations - do a written task. Tailor the interview to the needs of the position. For most positions, outside of sales and secret agency, behavioural questions suffice.

I would always go by potential, i.e. invite the applicant to think about which future topics, offers and formats they would like to contribute to the company. Nobody pays for the status quo. We want to grow with all our employees and it is important to know where we can strengthen them and where they can strengthen us.
