First of all, we no longer refer to the term corporate social responsibility or CSR. That term evolved more than 20 years ago thanks to the millennium challenges of the United Nations and its creator, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Additionally, with the UN Global Compact, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, the role of private companies, especially that of transnational companies, also changed. Today, corporate programs that relate to communities and society in general have to be linked to the SDGs and respect for Human Rights. It is no longer a simple CSR of yesteryear, it must now be seen as a comprehensive sustainability program, which includes multiple components and long-standing strategies.

One thing I found helpful is to send out a survey/questionnaire to your employees, to gauge their understanding, concerns and views on community priorities. You can use this feedback to shape your training making it both relevant and aligned to your training outcomes.

As you determine specific CSR goals that are relevant to your business and sector, it is also important to reflect on broader societal, political and environmental issues. What actions can your organization take to improve the diversity, equity and inclusion, to protect against further erosion of the planet due to climate change, and to advocate for public policies that promote sustainable practices and human rights?

Every corporate strategy must include training and learning. In my opinion, one of the keys is to first know and assess your own business to adequately determine its risks and impact on society and communities and on that basis intervene in a sustainable way, and not with a simple, isolated and temporary activation of social and corporate responsibility.

Online materials should be a good approach. However, to be more effective, should consider all to take this online training as a must qualified condition to work with frequent refreshing tests. Middle operational management is a good source for training activities and they shall be included in the training team when passing TOT.

Similarly, UNILEVER has a comprehensive online learning platform called the "Unilever Sustainable Living Plan Academy," which offers courses on various aspects of CSR such as ethical sourcing and waste reduction. They also have mentoring programs where employees can learn from experienced professionals in the company.

One of the best ways for employees to understand the CSR projects implemented by the Company is to volunteer for the project on the site. Get the employees involved in a CSR project of their interest!

Having them monitoring the compliance at their workstation...and later the line...with the support from their direct management.

Don't underestimate the power storytelling can have here. Real-life examples and case studies are a great place to start - as is having trainees volunteer on-site. But you want to make sure you're not leading with facts and data. Folks tune out when these pieces come first. Leading with story is the way trainees can begin to feel invested in the work and see themselves in the impact. Once this groundwork has been established, then the data, metrics, numbers, etc can be used to back up the emotional connection folks now have.

Putting effort in finding local and relevant examples and case studies will bring your training to life, as well as inspire your delegates

One of the most engaging ways to not only have the employees be aligned to the CSR goals but also recognize the ones who are proactive and participative is to provide gamified learning. The sense of competition is very helpful when it comes to completing information-intensive segments or complex compliance regulations (for example, laws regarding plastic use, or as mentioned above, knowledge of SDGs). Healthy inter-departmental competition can be encouraged - for example, the team that saves the most on paper or electricity earns badges. These scores are shared on a LeaderBoard for maximum impact and engagement.

Training employees in CSR is a crucial first step, but it's not the end goal in environmental management. To make a lasting impact, organizations must integrate CSR values into their everyday operations, from policies and procedures to communication strategies. A clear articulation of the CSR vision and goals is essential, as is creating avenues for employee participation in these initiatives. In doing so, CSR becomes more than a training agenda; it becomes a pervasive organizational culture that drives sustainable progress.

Incorporating a CSR culture into your organisation starts from the top and mirrored throughout an organisation. Putting CSR on the SMT agenda with performance targets, and forums where managers and staff can share the challenges and triumphs of their achievements, will help reinforce culture acceptance of CSR. Being honest about the challenges and sharing solutions all help. Achievements and outcomes should be shared via an focused communications strategy. Remember that your community needs to be informed about your activities and outcomes

One way to foster a culture of CSR is by promoting psychological safety within the workplace. This means creating an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas and concerns without fear of judgement or negative consequences. When employees feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to speak up about social and environmental issues and suggest ways in which the organization can make a positive impact. Here are a handful of ways to can foster a sense of psychological safety for your team and others: * Practice Giving Feedback. * Get To Know Everyone. * Collaborate and Share Ownership. * Deal With Things When They Come Up. * Ask People How They're Doing, and Mean It.

Some ways organizations can foster a culture of CSR are to design, implement and support programs that encourage volunteerism. Organizations could provide time-off for employees to volunteer as board members, fundraisers and advocates for charitable causes. Additionally, find opportunities to recognize and celebrate the voluntary achievements of employees. Organizations can also offer matching donations for charitable fundraising initiatives that their employees participate in.

While 70% of employees are aware of the concept of CSR, only 29% know “precisely what it is.” According to a Cegos study, nearly three-quarters of employees believe that their organization should set up CSR training for all those involved in the process. Don’t hesitate to organize dedicated training for managers so they can be exemplary and help their teams adopt responsible practices. In order to implement a CSR strategy, you need to surround yourself with the right people, co-construct a CSR action plan with them, set up dedicated actions, and communicate with your internal and external stakeholders.

Concretize the real-life examples, along with the theory, with actual field experience - i.e. Involve & include staff participation in one or several CSR activities.
