An example of planning ahead involves assessing risk with your team daily. Starting with “real hazards” risks that are present during the daily task such as any energy that can be controlled through isolation or administrative controls. Next is to focus on “high hazards” items that are life saving rules such as fall, electrical, caught in between, and struck by hazards. After the risk is assessed the most important part is to demonstrate how to communicate these to the crew. Important questions about scope, workflow, equipment needed, and risks should be discussed. This assignment should not be a “pencil-whipped” exercise but a Real conversation that is done with care by a frontline leader. The engagement encourages better planning.

Insuring worker safety is always a challenging task. The worker and their front line leader, must be involved. Without those two people, it will not work. They must understand the difference between safe and at risk behaviors. They must be trained perform a quality, safe and productive task and not assume that they can do it. Audits must be performed, but not only safety, but by the superintendents on the project or plant. Finally, senior leadership must be involved and take an active role in the plant or on the project.

Implementation on the work place & empowerment of staff to stop unsafe acts/report unsafe conditions 5. Monitoring 6. Reporting the problem areas & carrying out corrective actions 7. Assessing the effectiveness of corrective actions 8. Updating, reviewing and again implementing 9. Continual improvement

Drawing from my experience, identifying potential hazards and developing control measures is a fundamental step. Providing comprehensive training, adequate equipment, and necessary resources is equally important. Clear communication of safety expectations and objectives helps in aligning everyone towards a common goal of minimizing accidents and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Providing resources is another constructive method for managing safety risks. Employers must ensure employees have access to the necessary safety equipment, adequate safety supervision, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) based on the nature of work and industry.

I am a big advocate of creating a tracking mechanism for the following: 1) Engagement and knowledge of all employees in the area of safety 2) Leadership's ability to identify and address unsafe behaviors and gaps in knowledge I believe that if the employees are invested and educated on how to stay safe and leadership is actively teaching and correcting actions that could cause someone harm at an appropriate rate, your end results (number of accidents/incident rates) will reveal a culture devoted to the well-being of its workers. Many workplaces claim to have this but if you're not finding a way to use metrics to track and improve, it is likely your safety program is falling short of its potential.

Its helpful to improve onsite safety culture by involving and empowering workers at site. Its become easy to implement the safety when workers realize that safety rep. or safety officer is the only person at site who care for their safety and health and who remind them that their safe return to home at the end of every day's job is more important for their family rather then the employer. Risk and hazards awareness also improve in workers when they feel that safety is not only their priority but also their daily life need and by following safe system of work ensuring them their safe return from job.

I have learnt that, no one construction team is the same when it comes to building a safety culture. Especially when you have a highly diverse team of well trained and skilled professionals to local labourers with zero training. It is even more difficult when some labourers have worked for years without observing any safety precaution and have gone seemingly unscathed. So basically, "What are you going to show me that I don't already know?" I went from handling a team of averagely trained workers to handling a large team with diverse backgrounds. Frankly, I am still learning, it is not an easy feat. But one thing I have learnt is INVOLVEMENT IS KEY. You will be surprised what you can learn from an unskilled or untrained worker.
