What are the most effective grant writing tips for small businesses?

Often people will contact me searching for grant writing assistance but are unclear on what they need the funding for. I think it's best that you take time to identify clear goals and gaps that you are seeking to address with the grant funds.

You'd be surprised at how many grants get denied because the request does not meet the requirements that were plainly outlined in the instructions! Common things to watch out for: -It seems simple, but make sure you meet grant deadline, including deadline specifics like the date the application needs to be postmarked or received -Keep within the word limits. Don't push the boundaries. -Include all required documents -Send the application to the correct address and current contact. - Review the instructions again before it goes out to make sure you meet all qualifications, and requirements. It's the worst feeling when you finish your grant proposal only to find out you don't meet the requirements!

This right here is my #1 tip that I stress when conducting Grant Readiness Masterclasses. As a former reviewer, the first step we took to reduce the number of applications we had to review was to check to see if the applicant followed basic instructions. If basic instructions were not followed the applications were disqualified. Make sure you read the guidelines and instructions multiple times to make sure instructions are followed precisely.

One of the top reasons grants applications are rejected is because the writer did not follow directions. You only provide what they are asking for, nothing more, nothing less. Even if the request seems like it could be an error, still submit exactly what they ask for.

Clarity and specificity are the keys to persuasiveness. Here's my four pronged advice for success:. 1. Clearly identify your goals and how you plan to get there. Specificity is a must. 2. Show measurable outcomes and how you're going to track your progress. 3. Make it very clear how you're going to achieve your goals. Less narrative and more specifics about how you're going to get there. 4. Overall, the goal is to provide a clear picture of you plan to do with the grant, how you’re going to track your progress, how you’re going to prove success, and importantly, who benefits when you succeed. Pro Tip: Cozy up to the institution providing the grant by explaining how your success is their success. How will you move THEIR goals forward.

I have reviewed applications where it was evident that the response was cut and pasted from another application. The response would reference another grantor or information did not quite flow with the request at hand. Having someone proofread your application before submittal is a great idea to help mitigate errors.
