What are the most effective decision-making strategies when you're short on time?

The 3 things that I look for when I know I'm short on time is Impact, Consequence and Delegation. Impact: What kind of Impact is created by work I am doing, Is it something through which the whole project would benefit or is it something that would be okay to give some time to considering I have other Important tasks Consequence: Always ask the question, how much time do I have with this, should I treat this as my priority? Asking your superiors this will ensure you do not waste time. Delegation: "You cannot boil the ocean, if you try you'll be there all your life" Delegation is important, and knowing who to delegate is even more important. Delegating will make space for you to work on more important things.

Short Time? Dont Panic! 1. Urgent? - REMEMBER ARCHIEVE in TEXT BOX? Apply that urgency to decisions. Is this strategic, time-sensitive, or can it wait? 2. Existing frameworks: Remember SWOT? Adapt it for quick analysis. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats – what's most relevant to this choice? 3. 80/20 rule: Don't chase perfection. Aim for "good enough" decisions that are 80% optimal, 20% faster. Think pizza, not gourmet. 4. Believe your GUT : You've got an internal radar. Here are some strategies to help you make decisions efficiently: Prioritize Tasks: Identify the most critical tasks and decisions that need immediate attention. Focus on high-impact items and leave less crucial decisions for later. Set Time Limits: Allocate a specific amount of time for decision-making to avoid getting stuck in analysis paralysis. Use a timer or deadline to create a sense of urgency and prevent overthinking. Use the 80/20 Rule (Pareto Principle): Concentrate on the few key factors that will have the most significant impact on the outcome. Identify and prioritize the vital elements that will contribute the most to your goals. Trust Your Instincts:

Consider multiple viewpoints: Seek out the right people with relevant expertise to clearly articulate their views to help you broaden your perspective and make the best choice. Make decisions as close as possible to the action: Seek input and guidance from team members who are closest to the action. Address the root cause, not just the symptoms: Develop a plan to fix the root cause of the problem, or else the problem is likely to repeat itself. Balance short-term and long-term value: Finding the right balance between short-term and long-term risks and considerations is key to unlocking true value. Be timely: Address each element with a heightened sense of urgency.

In my experience these 3 strategies are helpful! Prioritize ruthlessly: Not all decisions deserve equal effort. Identify the high-impact choices and focus your mental energy there. Delegate or postpone less critical decisions to free up space for clear thinking. 10-minute rule: When faced with a pressing choice, give yourself 10 minutes to gather key facts, outline options, and assess potential consequences. Leverage intuition: Tap into your intuition after considering the basic facts. It can act as a powerful compass, guiding you towards the choice that resonates most deeply.

The Pareto principle espouses that 80% of effects and results often come from 20% of the effort put in. This then helps you to be more judicious with the limited time you have because once you identify the top 20% of things you need to do to truly move the needle you can cut out the fluff and set to work on only those important activities.

Applying the 80/20 rule is like tending a garden: just as a gardener knows that 20% of the plants produce 80% of the blooms, a wise manager recognizes that 20% of efforts yield 80% of results. By nurturing these key 'plants', or focusing on the most productive tasks, one can cultivate a flourishing garden of success with less effort, letting the less impactful 'weeds' of lesser tasks be set aside.

That it the perfect thing to do. Decision making isn't easy if you don't have the skill. You require a tool to solve the mystery. You color the hats or number them. It will make simple to decide at the end. Keep in mind that you have complete details; facts and data, risks and opportunities, process and overview, alternative. Categorize them and decide.

The OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) is a decision-making framework developed by military strategist John Boyd, emphasizing rapid decision-making in dynamic environments. For example, in agile software development, OODA can be used during a sprint retrospective to observe how the sprint was carried out and identify areas for improvement. It can orient itself to feedback from stakeholders and project teams about what went well and what did not. The team can then decide based on its observations and orientation, what to change in terms of its processes or development going forward. Then apply these processes to future sprints Your key metrics should focus on decision cycle time, adaptability to new conditions, and action effectiveness

The WRAP Model (Widen Your Options, Reality-Test Your Assumptions, Attain Distance Before Deciding, and Prepare to Be Wrong) is a decision-making framework proposed by Chip Heath and Dan Heath in their book "Decisive." If decision-making is the key to your business success, then you must realize that you need time for effective decision-making. Lay out the number of options considered, quality of assumptions tested, effectiveness of perspective-taking, and robustness of contingency plans. Avoiding confirmation bias is one of the most dangerous evils of decision-making. We put extra weight on data that confirms our own assumptions and validates our thinking. This is what makes us feel our case is unique and pushes us to discount others.

In my experience, root cause analysis saves you time and helps to ensure that your problem-solving is targeted and goes right to the root of the problem. Asking the five whys is a way to get down to the root cause of the problem. This is because every incremental why digs around the answer and provides insight that helps to illuminate the root cause. Solutions are most effective and sustainable when they tie directly to root causes.

The Five Whys technique is a root cause analysis tool that involves asking "why" repeatedly to uncover a problem. How you ask, and the tone you ask them matters, emotional intelligence is key in this one. Example: Why did the project fail? The project failed due to inadequate planning and lack of resources. Why was there inadequate planning? The project team did not have a clear understanding of the scope of the project. Why did the project team not have a clear understanding of the scope of the project? The project team did not receive adequate training and guidance from senior management. Why did the project team not receive adequate training and guidance from senior management? Senior management did not provide...etc You get the idea...

Most strategies attempt to organize information, identify gaps in that information, and then objectify that information in order to make a supportable decision. Whether you use a particular tool or process, most people can intelligently presume an 80% solution based on what they already know. For a short turnaround decision, leverage this and look for added viewpoints. A couple of well placed words of wisdom from people you respect and who have faced similar challenges can usually move the needle from an 80% confidence to 90% confidence. Unless there is an unusual complexity you will quickly encounter diminishing returns if you add much more effort into the process.

Effective decisions can be made in a short time supported by the following -Think of 3 plausible scenarios. They should be the worst, the normal and the best. -Consider your inherent risk and then the residual risk. - Consider the probability of something happening and relate it to the impact. The Quality of the data you are using 2. How that informs the speed of decision-making 3. Alignment of actions with strategic objectives with the team and the organization's overall 4. Implementation of decisions. One thing I use every week is an Urgent-Important Matrix for prioritizing tasks. Due this Sunday night, and your week will get better. Also, I find doing most of my hard decision-making in the morning. Decision fatigue is a real thing so don't overwhelm yourself with this stuff. It defies logic, but I tend to rely on my 'sixth sense' when pressed with time. The energy I feel around decisions I have to make is always right. I have tried to rely on logic (EGO), I attempted to rely on my heart, and both have deceived me, whereas the 'sixth sense' is never wrong.
