What are the most effective communication skills for a sustainability consultant?

Listen. A trap that some sustainability consultants fall into is telling people that they must change because ... well, the planet is burning ... water quality is becoming toxic ... there will be huge storms and extreme weather ... or do you not care about the future? Most every one understands that there is a climate crisis, and most have children, grandchildren or friends with children, so they care about the future. Before you can help them you have to understand why they are seemingly incapable of change. We only earn the right to express our own opinions if we value the opinions of others. Listening to what they have to say. Listen to understand, not to respond. Then you can advise.

Often as professionals, we can get lost in the technical jargon, but it's important to tailor information to suit each group's specific interests and goals, i.e., what investors want to hear isn't necessarily what the HR team wants to know.

Listen to your stakeholders. Empathy is the foundation of trust, so pay attention. If you listen, genuinely, your clients will tell you exactly what they need from you. Giving them what they need is the easy bit. Once you understand the client's needs, focus in on tangible & obtainable changes. From there, you can start to frame your story. The most effective storytelling relies on evidence-based arguments, supported by edited data that clearly exemplifies the benefits to be had, without ignoring any potential downside. Engaging with key stakeholders can also be a powerful way to drive change, so make sure you're fully leveraging the action potential of your whole audience.

Purpose comes before a claim. Before letting people know about the purpose, create your own purpose by diving into the problem. Identify it, stick with it, make it worth it and solve it. Once it could be done, you better know what is going to be achieved. Plus, you start looking from customers eyes. Communication becomes better and your clients start following you..
