Before handling healthcare data, be sure you are doing so in compliance with HIPAA and privacy laws. Next, you can use electronic health records data from EPIC systems through FHIR protocols. This gives you access to diagnostic data for the patient. Next, you should standardize it to account for different distributions and variations among different demographics. An important thing ML practitioners forget is that different hospitals have different data collection mechanisms thereby resulting in the inapplicability of the same model and distributions across different healthcare providers.

Aggregating data is one of major steps in AI and for success of AI models. Sources of data, quality of collection of this data at point of care, latency and missingness of data points may lead model being useless and biased. While several companies adopt ethical and responsible AI framework, they predominantly need to focus on data strategies itself as models can be curated but not data. Different systems of data add lot of complexity of usage of the data as they may miss important connecting points. Healthcare systems are not yet full adopted newer standards, resulting into data is still being siloed. ML engineers at the end take the hit by using this information then.
