What are the most common weaknesses in your VC pitch and how can you address them?

One of the biggest weaknesses I see in pitches is founders that think small. Many founders are scared to put big ideas into their early stage pitches, but these are essential to getting VCs excited. I’m all for starting with a focused or niche strategy, but VCs want to hear that you are tackling a big market and have big ambitions. Lay out the case for the long term.

The problem-solution fit is usually what VCs evaluate in the first few slides. Some founders would tell a story and the implied problem, but when they get the solution section, there is a disconnect between the problem stated and the solution offered. Make sure you understand clearly what problem you are solving with your solution and avoid trying to find the problem after the fact.

Given my recent experience at Wharton school with VC professors and industry expert panels, here is what VC pitches lack/ fail to address 1. More than the problem identified , it’s about is the problem worth solving. 2. Then , why are you as the founder the right person for the job - passion , personal experience 3. Is it actually scalable to make $$$

There are a few] big issues I see in pitches. One is founders using the "we are like XXX for ZZZ." We are the AirBnb of [insert industry.] Or they think their serviceable market is bigger than it really is. And lastly they try to address a problem in too many industries at once from launch. Your solution may solve problems in many verticals but will require teams and domain knowledge not currently staffed. Start by solving a need in one and move to new markets after proving success. Discounting the time, domain knowledge, expertise it takes to do well in certain markets can waste valuable time and money.

a compelling pitch for venture capitalists hinges on establishing a problem-solution fit. VCs seek a genuine and substantial problem with a distinctive, viable solution. Building trust requires thorough market research, customer validation, and data-backed evidence showcasing the problem's scale and urgency. Articulating the value proposition and emphasizing competitive advantages and differentiation is crucial. Highlighting how your solution aligns with market trends and meets customer needs solidifies the case for investment, ensuring sustained interest and confidence from potential investors.

Traction is increasingly important in a world looking at path to profitability and sustainability. What are the key customers and logos? What is their track record? But perhaps more importantly is also retention numbers. Huge discounting to get on customers is no way to go, and recurring customers are the biggest indicator of value.

Traction and growth are the quantitative metrics all VCs look at. This is mainly to demonstrate that there is a demand for your product and more and more people want it. It also demonstrates your startup's ability to execute. Be clear about what you track and how to improve it.

In my view, VCs scrutinize a pitch for evidence of traction and growth, crucial indicators of customer demand and scalability. Achieving measurable milestones is essential to avoid appearing too early-stage or risky for investment. Defining and tracking key metrics, backed by data and graphs illustrating historical and projected performance, strengthens the pitch. Clarifying assumptions behind projections is vital. Moreover, spotlighting the optimization of unit economics, including customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, and gross margin, showcases a strategic and sustainable approach, instilling confidence in potential investors.

The past is not predictive of the future. Try to ensure the assumption you make are realistic and timing is reasonable once you predict growth, and list risks to gain more credibility.

VCs critically assess the team and culture during a pitch, gauging their aptitude for executing the vision. The team's skills, diversity, and values, along with effective collaboration, are paramount. To avoid any perception of lacking talent, introduce co-founders and key members, highlighting backgrounds and achievements. Showcase the team's passion, commitment, and alignment with the mission. Demonstrating adaptability in a dynamic environment is key. Articulate the team's values, culture, and feedback mechanisms, underscoring their role in fostering performance and innovation. A cohesive, capable team enhances the pitch's appeal to potential investors.

99% of companies claim their culture is XYZ (more or less same story). Give examples of how company culture and principles actually manifest themselves in daily decisions or processes. Don't try to look cool, perfect, or like everybody else. VCs are looking for something unique that differentiates you, not for another canned sales pitch.

In your VC pitch, clearly define your market opportunity and strategy. Use data to delineate your target market and total addressable market. Highlight your unique value proposition and how it differentiates you from competitors. Segment your market thoughtfully, showing a deep understanding of customer needs. Leverage emerging trends to position your offering strategically. Detail your market penetration and customer acquisition strategies, demonstrating a clear path to capturing and retaining your target audience.

While pitching, most founders underestimate the importance of market sizing! TAM= X SAM= X/3 SOM= X/10 (Generally arrived at using a top down approach) Also,most founders in India see the entire country from one lens and that is where market sizing goes wrong!

Assuming you already have made your pricing model and your target customers clear, you need to describe how you are going to reach your target customers (marketing strategy) and how you are going to convert them into paying customers (sales strategy). You also need to make sure that your go to market strategy ties to your financial projections - your cost and your results, shown in your financial projections, should be consistent with the strategy and tactics you lay out on this slide.

Valuation with startups is a tricky beast. In the dynamic world of startups, the driving force is often the founders' vision, which frequently manifests as the well-known "hockey stick" growth projection in business plans (when such plans are present). It is essential for founders to recognize that offering financial incentives is a key factor in attracting venture capital investments. During the pitch, or through the accompanying documents, it's crucial to clearly articulate both current and future funding strategies, including their application towards stimulating growth. Valuation remains the cornerstone of any negotiation. Lacking historicals, underlying drivers must be thoroughly evaluated and pressure tested against the market.

It is SO important to have a detailed plan for what you will do with your funding. Often times, we get a breakdown between large categories like R&D, Sales and Marketing, etc. How those investments will drive sustainable growth and how those decisions were made matter more than the % itself.

It is important you cover all the basics. As a senior member of the team, I and other senior members will go deep and detailed on some aspects of the pitch. In a very granular way. Very much off-path for the pitch. This can be annoying but it also helps us understand the depth of knowledge of the startup. A common recent example is AI - "We use AI to solve this or that problem." When we ask "How," some simply say, "It's complex analytics, blah, blah, blah" - That is an immediate Pass. Others will answer the question and go deeper. They will go well beyond the label and demonstrate mastery of the subject and demure when they do not know. That demonstrates depth and humility.

Less is more. No one needs all the details (and if they do, there is an appendix for that). Keep it clear and to the point. What value do you create, and why you? Plus, how will you return this investment? Are you aware of realistic challenges in execution? Any PowerPoint can be pretty, yet if you sound like you've done your homework, be honest, confident, curious, and transparent.

The best pitch decks address the following principal questions extremely clearly and concisely: - what problem or pain point have you identified - how does your product or service address or solve it - how large is your market - who are your competitors - why can your company outcompete your competitors (incl. competitive advantages and barriers to entry) - how much gross revenue/net profit can you generate, and how quickly - how much money do you need, by when, and exactly for what - what are the anticipated exit options/return for your investors, and by when - why is your team the best team to execute on this vision

Most pitch decks suck. It's the reality of the business world we live in. Most entrepreneurs try to explain their problems and solutions. Is that wrong? No Is that boring? Hell yeah. VCs are human beings. Imagine yourself looking at a 100-pitch deck consisting of similar "Problem" slides. The only way to stand out is by being creative in your pitch deck. Only then will you get the attention of that bored VC employee looking at your deck.

There are ample resources providing great insights into how to prepare and present your materials. Practice and be prepared to discuss a host of questions. For a non-confidential deck, you may reference data about your business or product that is available upon entering into a confidentiality agreement. For a confidential deck, include the data and links to more detailed information via data room access or copies of the materials themselves. An unwillingness to share your data (or the discovery that you’ve misrepresented your data in some way) will be an immediate red flag. You may only get one chance to connect with the reviewer, so be forthright about the opportunities you plan to attack and the obstacles you plan to overcome.

One of the biggest challenges we encounter is company leaders presenting an “exit strategy” that provides details around exactly what will happen given the various facts and circumstances (e.g., acquisition by a strategic at this time and for at least this price). While VCs want to talk about the potential exit paths, what they want to hear is how the company plans to create and capture value (and overcome the various obstacles that will inevitably arise). This is particularly true when talking about key resources, customer relationships, and future financings. What if those things don’t work out? How do you plan to navigate those obstacles? Thoughtful answers will enable the VC to think about working with the company to achieve success

The VC is pitching the startup as well. Founders are the brave souls that embark on the journey of building a great company. Great VCs understand they are just enablers. They can provide capital, contacts, resources, intros, advice and expertise, but the startup has to choose you, the same way you choose what startups to invest in. Especially in great projects, VCs need to fight to make the cap table as founders trim the # of investors. The same way startups need to know what problem they are solving and how, VCs need to know what value they can provide as strategic investors will always win in an allocation battle

VCs and startups are partners in a company's journey. Founders take the bold step of building a company. VCs, as enablers, offer funds, networks, and expertise. However, startups select their VCs just as VCs pick startups, particularly in high-quality projects. VCs must compete for a spot on the cap table. Like startups identify their problem and solution, VCs must recognize their value to win in strategic investment scenarios.

The most crucial aspect of an engaging pitch ultimately is distinguishing between expectations and reality across three key categories. A problem requires a solution that is not only realistic but also viable to prevent recurrence. It is the responsibility of a VC to discern between a promising idea and its execution, considering the nuances among the impetus (the idea), the process (the team), and the outcome (the product or service). Effectively separating these aspects while remaining unbiased towards any single component is challenging, as projects often only present their best aspects. A weak idea may be offset by a strong team, and a poor product might receive some leniency due to the high expectations set by its talented team.

Failing to understand the firm's investment thesis and partner background. It is odd when a startup is deep in the area of a partners background and the presenter has zero idea. The goal is to attract capital from someone who can help you grow. How do you do that if you do not even know the background of the principles and their porfolio.
