What are the most common reasons for startup failure during scaling?

Having successfully built a deeptech startup and experiences from the past startups, I believe it's not about the lack of product/ market fit, before product market fit comes problem solution fit (PSF). This refers to the fact to understand your users, their behaviours, what they want and value. If you do not understand the underlying problem, you'll not be able to make a good product and deliver it. So you need to iterate through multiple sprints, talk to as much customers and users as you can and built with pouring every ounce of will in your heart to solve the problem. While doing so focus more on adding value, not revenue. The revenue will follow eventually.

Actually I would disagree somewhat with the product fit as a basis. Lack of solid financial footing has been the weakness in the majority business operations. Cutting corners in final stages of out-put; 2nd and 3rd rated qualities of materials, attitudes shifts of leadership, shifts in markets, and inflexible or incomplete strategic planning are all contributing factors. Yet, each one was controllable.

From my perspective, one common mistake during startup scaling is not evolving teams properly. As companies grow, they face different crises and need to adapt. Key reasons include: Leadership Evolution: Inadequate leadership can stagnate growth. Autonomy Crisis: Balancing team autonomy and control is crucial. Control Crisis: Implementing control systems without stifling innovation is challenging. Delegation Crisis: Founders must trust their team and delegate effectively. Documentation Crisis: Clear processes are essential for consistency. Integration & Collaboration: Silos hinder efficiency and innovation. Continuous organizational evolution is vital for overcoming these crises and ensuring sustainable growth.

Unrealistic expectation of adoption / returns. The original startup may be very successful with a hand-picked targeted audience. A larger audience may have greatly reduce interest, or be familiar with an alternative that the original audience was ignorant of.

In my experience with my startup, we remained mindful of growing too quickly. We were a company of 16 employees. The product required highly skilled workers, and the market was competitive. Finding customers was easy, but rolling out the additional product took time and some upfront capital. New employees had to be hired, supplies ordered, and countless other tasks performed to implement the new customers. I learned to alternate between marketing, ramping up, and stabilizing. This balance is critical because if a startup grows too quickly and doesn't take the time to stabilize in between new growth, it will produce a lower quality product that is late, and the customers will be unhappy.

During managing cash flow; Monthly, 3-month and 6-month income and expense forecasting Tracking forecast and actual (deviation, if any) Diversifying sources of income Optimize expenses (improve processes) Several months of cash reserves for possible crisis situations can be beneficial.

1. Failing to understand the Market Requirements. 2. No Control on Expenditures. 3. Deviating from Vision and Mission of the Company in a hurry to Complete the scaling up process.

I believe it is a bad product and services, when your products are not effective enough to bring changes and results if you even have investment it will never run. It should honestly be making an impact and bring change in the life of your users. Cash will flow ... Management of cash flow if you are a first time entrepreneur you will learn and there will be people who will teach you.

Hire and fire culture. Hiring in bulk, then because of pressure to perform - abusive behaviour, favouritism , unrealistic targets, credit snatching. Quick promotions on the basis of target achievement, that lacks team handling completely. No handholding , insufficient tenure of training , leading to terminations and havoc among other employees. It makes it really really unstable, And a bubble of fake milestones like the share market.

Sometimes founders themselves play a significant role in startup failures. One reason could be a lack of self-awareness. When founders are overly confident or unwilling to acknowledge their weaknesses, they may make poor decisions or fail to seek help when needed. Additionally, micromanagement can stifle innovation and demotivate teams, hindering growth. Moreover, a failure to pivot or adapt to changing market conditions can lead to stagnation. Founders who prioritize ego over learning and collaboration often struggle to navigate challenges effectively. Let's recognize the importance of humility, openness to feedback, and a willingness to evolve for startup success.

Your performance as an organization is your culture over the long term. A weak culture devoid of trust, psychological safety, and accountability is a recipe for disaster in a startup environment. On the flip side, a culture where people feel safe to show up as themselves, trust their coworkers, and are comfortable having difficult conversations is what leads to greater resilience and success. These qualities lead to greater productivity, engagement, innovation, and loyalty which all have an impact on your bottom line and your team's ability to navigate the constant change inherent in the startup journey. Plus you'll have a lot more fun along the way!

Your first employees are the most important for the success of your business. Often, it is wiser to hire people who share your business vision, have a similar lifestyle, possess an entrepreneurial mindset, and can easily adapt to uncertainties and rapid changes. Never hire people who are accustomed to the work model of large institutions that already have all their processes well-aligned and structured.

Interesting. It's certainly a theme I've seen, sometimes showing up as "Dead Wood", the "HiPPO in the room" or even the well meaning "Scout". Let's go back to the "Product-Market Fit" research, this time my experience indicates that making sure we had the "Why" sorted out AND transparently shared, regularly elucidated and referenced for decision making, allowed for outcomes that were often successful. I've also seen scale failures occur due to a trigger-happy "firing squad", cutting staff is much more costly than growing the horsepower of the staff. Opt for growing people, go separate ways based on fact (OKR & KPI), seek intrinsic alignment.

Over estimation of TAM and under estimation of the effort (time, money and marketing) required to convert a customer, basically, confirmation bias of the founders.

Sure, being unrealistic is a contributor. Yet ... we again come back to Product-Market Fit Research, what's unrealistic? I've seen apparently unrealistic in so many areas of life scaling journeys such as becoming accredited, getting through military initiatives, raising a family, businesses of varying bold objectives, competitive sports, etc. ... and almost all cases of great successes Do the OKR, it's important, however continuously deliver and perform iterative planning. The success comes from iteratively adjusting the bold plan, and being transparent about degree of confidence. There is such a thing as unrealistic, and it does lead to failure. "un-SMART" OKRs is simply a plan to fail, and spinning on OKRs also led to scale failures.

Assumptions gone wrong is the number one reason why startups fail. Assumptions about the customer, product, target market, what it will take etc. Before committing big , validate your assumptions first with the smallest , affordable experiments you can run.

Startup failures during scaling often stem from unrealistic expectations, like overestimating market size or growth rate. This leads to poor strategies, wasted resources, and disappointment. To mitigate, set SMART goals, validate assumptions with data, and remain flexible, adjusting plans as you learn and grow.

My experience, especially for those ambitions that seek global reach, is the myopic sense of "we are prepared" without realizing the global is not just GDPR or North America. I've seen something as local as Quebec's Bill-64 & 96 derail a scale project, mostly because of inattentiveness to regulations. Failures in over-pivoting can occur too. Architectures & business processes need to perform adequate risk analysis, threat modelling and align appropriate to the economic view. When we were iterative in incrementally improving regulatory position, success was achieved with less friction. BTW> I've been part of a failed scale initiative due to legal contract with an industry-gorilla with too restrictive clauses, discovered very late.

One more thing will be lack of systems and structures that support scaling. Without foundational systems and organizational structures in place such as standardized processes, policues, automation tools, etc, scaling will bring about chaos which may eventually lead to the failure of the business.

When businesses try to scale, they need a team member who can establish systems and processes for operational excellence. Often times what you have in a start up as an innovator or visionary. McDonald’s fries taste the same no matter where in the world you have them and that is from operational excellence .

The idea should be matured before the vision is established. Vision is an absolute clarity that the Founder and his startup has for its exponential growth.

Most common reason of startup failure during scaling are Lack of working experience of company founder, even in old time baniya (businessman ) send their kids to work and learn the working and understand the market before handing over their business, because he known the value of practical knowledge and fear of loss and failure.
