What are the most common conflicts between vocal coaches and students?

Something to keep in mind by the coaches 1.All students are not the same and don't have the same skill set or enthusiasm levels. 2.All students are not interested in the subject but as a person the coach can influence students to like and get motivated to the subject 3. Students even though may show a tough behavior,they are afraid, concerned, confused about their choices and future. Already pressure is build upon by society and family so any threshold cross can lead to aftereffects. Students : Coaches are humans, they can make mistakes, they may keep expectations from you but they also can make major contributions in your growth. Try to understand mutually it will help both teams

As a coach, I try not to forget that it’s MY JOB to adapt my communication to my client’s. If there is a conflict of any sort, my first priority is to check if I didn’t slide through the rapport building phase propelled by enthusiasm or contract. My checklist is: - how certain am I that I successfully built rapport with my client? - do I remember to partner with my client at every stage? - am I keeping my ego under control? If any of these alarms goes off - I try to go back and start that bit again. There is no resistance, just the lack of rapport- I keep telling myself.

Something to consider; who is the responsible party for message clarity. If we apply 'transactional analysis' thinking to our communications it becomes the sender of the information to ensure understanding of a message. Therefore if the coach is sending information they should seek understanding of the concept.

The responsible part is both parties. Sender and receiver. If the communication is lost by the sender not delivering or if the receiver is not listening or paying attention. The communication is lost. This is why communication feedback is key to both parties. Head nods, repeat information, eye contact.

A lack of understanding. Lack of trust Lack of confidence in sticking with a coach who will work with you through good times and bad times. No connection between singer and coach.

This is a big thing. I have the solution. First, determine what YOUR hat is; a singer, a radio host, a voice actor, a tv presenter, a politician or public speaker? Second thing is: determine what you want to SOLVE. See “learning” as a problem (of a lacking skill or knowledge) that needs to be solved. So you work towards a set goal. Then, know the basics: you OWN two things: A: your body, B: your mind. Both can be stressed, used wrong and contain scars. Get them fixed. I advise Dianetics “Life Repair” for the mind, and CVT (Complete Vocal Technique) for the technique to correctly use the body.

All this sounds like people have to stay, necessarily deal or to live with a suboptimal training situation. Mentoring and empowerment are not about compromising that much, it is actually about having the best possible time and results for the accorded scope of work and clarified expectations. For instance, it does not make really sense to negotiate with a classic skilled coach to teach or show up something totally different..could be pop or scream metal.. you name it, because that might be not only their speciality but also vocation, lifestyle, whatever. Before going long term, it needs to be as clear as possible, like in every good working field, if it’s a good fit or not, on both sides. And if not, to handle consequently.

This is the funniest topic I have ever seen. A vocal coach and student in an extended conflict *should not waste each others time*. It is important to settle differences at the session. Never leave a student in an unresolved atmosphere. Never hide unresolved feelubgs from a coach (if you want a long term collaboration)
