Design Distinctions: - Conflicting priorities: DBAs place a premium on data integrity, security, performance, and scalability, whereas developers frequently prioritize application functionality and user experience. 3. Management of Change: - Unapproved changes: Developers who make database changes without DBA approval or who do not follow established processes can introduce risks and instability. 4. Troubleshooting and Performance - Pointing with your finger: DBAs may attribute performance issues to application code 5. Security Issues:

Most of the conflicts starts when the on going issue is not described/analyzed or understood properly by both developers or DBA’s. That’s where most of the times conflict happens. Sometimes, not including the right people in to the conversation can escalate the issue without the actual resolution. When the issue is not yet understood by the teams, including the right people into the conversation can help in identifying the issue quickly.

If there is a design difference in a project. That points to a poor planning or total lack of communication between DEVs and DB admins. Developers should already be aware of data types and their objective usage. Data type differencies are no longer a thing of debate between them.

Developers often just need to get a design up and running for proof-of-concept, design be damned. But it’s important after this stage to trust the DBAs to make enhancements and changes for security and efficiency

Access control: One of the most common challenges in any organization is "who" will have access to "what" and on "which" levels. For example If a Developer needs access to Entire PostgreSQL instances vs Database vs specific schema. A DBA's job is also to ensure that the data is protected and that the users have the required access(least access) to perform the job. The problem goes 10x depending on the data sensitivity or whether it contains PII data. A dev might think that having access to entire database makes life easier and help them develop things faster, however from DBA perspective it creates a hole in security.

Granting database access is like hosting a party – only invite the necessary guests to avoid chaos, and definitely don't let the neighbors have the keys to your wine cellar!

Security risks: Developers may neglect data security best practices, such as: - Encrypting sensitive data - Implementing proper authentication and authorization - Preventing SQL injection attacks Database administrators may need to apply and monitor security policies and data access and usage.

I always advocate for a change management structure like a very active Change Advisory Board that will promptly review changes to be implemented in prod. This has been very successful in bridging the change management gap in my experience working with developers.

I think as in all reasons for conflict, it starts with a lack of understanding and tolerance for each others perspective. In order to resolve or prevent conflict, it’s important for DBA’s and developers to realize that a diversity of views isn’t a bad thing and that there is “richness” in having a variety of views about a particular thing. It is also important for them to understand that some of the best relationships and growth comes from having a misunderstanding/conflict and that the goal when we disagree should always be what drives our actions; meaning, what is my ultimate goal? Am I trying to shame, blame, accuse or simply be right? Or am I trying to find the best solution that can bring the best outcome for all who are involved?

There are situations that can be resolved very early in the design and development process and for this reason DBAs must be included in the Software Development Life Cycle as early as possible. Unfortunately it seems most DBAs are only included once the product is productive. DBAs should also look at potential pitfalls before talking to the developers. Inviting developers to workshops to discuss the issues and present potential solutions if often far more constructive then simply saying SQL needs to be rewritten.
