What are the most common change impact assessment tools for Program Management?

All of these are great tools which definitely helps. But I believe more than these tools it’s all about individuality/ people over these tools any day. These tools can give you a quantitative comparison but what about the intuition or gut feeling. No tool can beat human intrusion. So I will always pick a human being over these tools

To me RACI is something which is indirectly an impact assessment tool as it is used to keep all those who are impacted, informed. It is extremely important to ensure flow of communications at all times especially when there are changes out of preview/scope of program. By keeping all stakeholders informed, we can avoid any shock elements as well as garner the desired level of support from Champions as well as keep distractors at bay.

The Change Impact matrix is a great tool to evaluate the impact of a change in a structured way. No change happens in isolation, triple constraints are always linked and often one impacts another but having said that and before we do that analysis we need to do below: 1) Why the change, urgency/importance/relevance, and related stuff. 2) What are the options to minimize the impact. 3) Once we have explored options and identified it cannot be avoided, we need to identify probable solutions to address the change. 4) What is in the best interest of the customer 5) Get the buy in from the stakeholders. Impact analysis alongside above will help minimize noise and ensure the PM gets the desired support to enforce the change.

A point that must be considered regardless of the change tool you decide to use in your project/program is the governance for change. It is important to define clear governance and its respective limits of authority.

Wow, a Scientific Management approach to change that assumes that we can quantify it and manage it up to 6 sigma. So, reactive. Try leading change. Leading change requires paradigm in multi-dimensional evaluation, risk analysis, 360 communication and power-sharing. And leaders and not managers. That’s why not that many orgs can achieve it and eventually get stuck with RACI and SWOT.
