I have worked under a few CEO/managers/leaders in my years of technical work, and from my point of view, there is a common factor that differentiates good from bad ones: Bad ones are prone to ignore details. The worse I had tended to avoid any technical explanations (though he had a PhD. in Engineering), what he called the "small minded Engineer mentality", while making huge product and business mistakes that could be avoided if he knew just a bit of detail. On the other hand, I had great leaders that cared about every detail of their product, being the first ones to tackle the worse problems in order to gain understanding, from talking to customers to reading code.

As stated above Power Engineering is a multidisciplinary field. It is also multicultural for international projects where the project team consists of mixture of multinational personnel. Culture plays a major factor and the manager must be aware of such cultures and try to avoid any miscommunication between his team. Must pay attention and be familiar with different sign language, expressions, and writing styles. In some cases it is essential to hire a full time instant translator during critical meetings.

In my experience, specifically while managing more than one project, structural steel is always in the critical path. Avoid awarding two overlapping projects to the same steel fabricator unless you monitor delivery schedule very closely and have full time representative at the the fabricator’s shop. Also focus on quality and related logistic issues.

This is applicable to other complex technical fields, where time and progress are not easily predictable: Get to the mud, understand the problems, the delays, and help. Ignore "yes-people", embrace those that tell you "No" when something is not possible or doesn't make sense. I have suffered several CEOs in Electronics that surrounded themselves with sycophants, and nothing demotivates a technical team as much as that.
