The value proposition has to be always objective driven and more than the value proposition it is about value exchange. Firstly one has to understand what is the objective of the brand and what value it creates for its customers. Bring more clarity with the aspiration of the brand but at the same time you need to be realistic and measurable. Interviews nowadays are not about, you ask and I answer rather take that as an opportunity and bring the forward thinking of what you can bring as a contributor and how you will do it. Mind it the interviewer generally doesn't validate you with absolute terms like you are right or wrong rather they want to see how you think. Your attitude, your knowledge and your skills defines the contribution.
Story telling is at the heart of standing out. How well you are able to string the narrative and guide them through the story, using analogies that resonates will make you unique. Adding to strong story telling the confidence with which you tell the story. If you own it, they will buy more easily and that will make you very unique.
Just like you work towards building a brand for your product or service, you need to build a brand for yourself too! One with a unique value proposition that sets you apart from the others. Intelligence can also be seen in one's level of observation, deep data analysis, strategizing, and being open to new challenges. And above all this intelligence doesn't depend on the number of years of experience. A person with only one year of experience can be more innovative & observant than the one with 5 years of experience. So, the way of hiring marketing people is required to be changed to get the best of the talents onboard.
My perspective to this is: Before you're called in for an interview, the company must have seen some values in you, probably through your previous works; but they need you to sell to them elevating ideas that would make their current clients stay loyal as well bring in fresh clients. In short words, you must have prepared how to sell yourself so as to be well perceived by the interviewer.
In my experience, specifically when determining if the project endeavor is right for me and the client, it’s critical to do thorough research of “where” and “how” the potential client has been positioned. Questions to consider: ? Who is the target audience the client is seeking? Have they been missing an audience due to improper segmentation? ? Why the need for a refresh or overhaul of the brand identity? What are we trying to create with this new identity? ? Do the employees resonate and identify with the new brand identity? Passionate people turn transactions - ensure your internal audience is just as satisfied as your external audience. Overall - make sure you’re asking questions upfront. Don’t guess.
Send the questions beforehand, laying out the agenda of the interview meeting will help the client prepare and gather any additional information. And also opens the door for the client to ask for clarification if necessary, or the chance to find the person that could answer specific questions beyond their knowledge.
One of the best practices when appearing for an interview in any profile related to brand marketing is to research the brand(s) of the company before appearing for the interview. In my opinion, having some observations about the previous brand campaigns the company has done is always important. Have some observations about the brand campaigns their competitors have done. Similarly, research about the brand category and the macro factors affecting the category. Also record some of your observations about new trends in branding. Jot down some suggestions regarding the company's branding activity with rationale for your suggestions. If you can include these in your answers, you will be able to demonstrate your interest in the company.

It’s great if you can think of branding ideas on the spot, that’s often part of the role you’re applying to, what sets you apart is showcasing that you understand how branding activations fit into larger business goals.

Too often am I conducting interviews and questions become run-on sentences about previous projects with no comments on how you felt about the work professionally, personally or its impact.
Showing that you are able to focus on a client's needs and goals, and tailoring strategies around what will best serve the client will go a long way. Too many branding strategies/strategists focus on what trends and personal preferences, neglecting the client's business.

Additionally, highlight your ability to adapt your personality to fit the company's culture while staying authentic to your own beliefs.

Personally I always love getting a handwritten note. It shows you care and that you know relationships go a long way. Even if I don't end up hiring you you will stay top of mind and am able to refer you when I know of a potential opening.

You spend time with some representatives from the company and learned more about the business. Is there any advice you can give? Feedback? Inspiration? A taste of the work you could do? I’ve been a hiring manager and candidate for this type of interview. What I look for in someone interviewing for a brand role, is how they have crafted their own brand. I look for the things about their brand that are part of any well defined brand. It gives me some insight into how they think about brand, connect brand elements to a brand essence, and the quality of their work.
To differentiate yourself, adding the human touch and demonstrating your transferable skills could help. Talking about hobbies and achievements done outside of the professional context can give you an edge and help connect with the recruiter.
While knowledge about the subject and skill set is important, what I usually look out for, when I am interviewing someone for this role is how much the candidate can walk the talk. Have they worked on their personal brand? Is their tone of voice consistent across all their communications(with the recruiters, interviewers, etc)? What is their personal brand positioning and are they able to stand by it beyond LinkedIn posts and emails? And lastly, if they have clarity of thought. The last one is subtle but an important factor because when you are in a branding role unless you bring clarity about what your brand stands for, and communicate the same to your team, it would be difficult to solve the brand challenges that are thrown at you.
There are people that have a style and their are people the can feel out the style for the organization. Know who you are and what you bring to the table. Don’t force a square peg in a round hole. Do your homework and weave a conversation that allows you to share how where you see some immediate wins.
When I am interviewing candidates and they can not talk about brands, we have an issue... Prep for discussion points like: Whats your favorite brand? Why? What would you do if you'd be leading that brand? Or about any product in the room: What do you think is the brand identity? How do they position themselves? How do they differentiate themselves? and so on
