What are the main differences and similarities between the Balanced Scorecard and the EFQM Excellence Model?

A balanced scorecard, besides being a strategic tool, is also a tool for communication and company alignment. There are sets of objectives and measurements that are customizable depending on the company, but the utmost importance of using a scorecard is the visibility and communication of the goals, how the goals will be measured, the frequency, and what KPIs are important. This is, therefore a bit of a tricky situation as a well-designed scorecard will yield the desired result whereas a poor designed scorecard will lead to people's modification to hit the numbers, which in sometimes time are detrimental to the overall performance of the company

The fact that Financial is the first metric listed is a hint regarding its importance with respect to the other metrics. The danger is Board meetings could be led by the CFO with decisions based on short term profit logic.

Customer focused metrics such as quality, delivery and cost mirror most customers’ value proposition metrics and therefore should support long-term business viability. Safety as a metric shows respect for the most valued resource, the people employed planning, designing, ordering, conveying, making, delivering, selling and servicing your product or service.

The EFQM is an improvement over the balanced scorecard approach as it considers all stakeholders. My concern is that as described, it lacks prioritization of stakeholders based on strategy. For example Customer Satisfaction at Toyota placed order as Quality, Efficiency, Cost. Though not at the detriment of the following order metrics. To this end the Process was the first place to improve quality while at least not negatively affecting efficiency or cost…improving both if possible. Certainly Customer Satisfaction at Toyota was playing the “long game”.

I think the similarity is that both systems use metrics to measure results. The difference is the priority placed on financial in BSC leading to short-term decision making. Eg month to month. What lacks in both is a clearly described philosophy that is interpreted in the prioritization and logic to apply the metrics.

During an audit of a government department, the entity invited me to attend a lavish event. I realized that accepting such an invitation could compromise the objectivity of the audit, so I politely declined and explained that our work policies require us not to accept such invitations to maintain integrity and professionalism.

Regardless of the approach that is taken it's critical to establish a culture of psychological safety as it relates to readouts of results with leadership teams. Employees should know that reporting "bad news" is viewed as "good news" and will not be punished. The earlier bad news is reported the faster leadership can respond and apply resources to resolve any issues. A culture of psychological safety will tell employees that it's ok to fail and learn which in turn will increase employee willingness to establish stretch goals and achieve more than was previously possible.

During an audit at a company, the entity I was auditing presented me with expensive gifts as a token of appreciation. While the intention was good, accepting gifts from the audited entity is unacceptable from an integrity and professionalism standpoint. I explained to them that audit policies prohibit accepting any gifts to ensure transparency and impartiality in the work. I returned the gifts with thanks and appreciation for their gesture.
