1 What is a PKI system?

In one of my experiences managing a PKI system for a large enterprise, the CA played a pivotal role in maintaining the lifecycle of certificates, from issuance to renewal and revocation. One critical function was the timely publication of Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs) to ensure revoked certificates could not be used in malicious transactions. Additionally, the CA was responsible for managing key pair generation for users and entities, ensuring keys were securely stored and never exposed during transport. Automated certificate issuance and renewal workflows were set up to streamline processes and reduce human intervention, minimizing the risk of errors and increasing operational efficiency.

One of the main functions of a CA is issuing and managing certificates, and it manages certificates transparently through the CT (Certificate Transparency) Log server. When a CA is requested to issue a certificate, it creates a pre-certificate containing the certificate's contents and delivers it to the CT Log Server. The CT log server returns a signed certificate timestamp (SCT), a time limit that promises the CA that it will add the pre-certificate to the log in time. Once registered in the log, the certificate is monitored periodically. The CA adds the SCT to the certificate and returns the certificate to the domain owner. Later, SCT is used to prove to the client that the certificate is a valid certificate registered in the log.

4 What are the types of CA?

There are different types of Certificate Authorities (CA) based on their level of authority, trust, and scope. The most common types are Root CA, Intermediate CA, and End-entity CA. A Root CA is the highest level of CA, with a self-signed certificate that acts as the ultimate source of trust in a PKI system. It can issue certificates to other CAs or entities. An Intermediate CA is a lower level of CA with a certificate issued by a root CA or another intermediate CA. It must follow the rules and policies of its parent CA and can issue certificates to other intermediate CAs or entities. Lastly, an End-entity CA is the lowest level of CA with a certificate issued by a root CA or an intermediate CA. It can only issue certificates to entities, not to other CAs.

As Root CA are the trust anchor, they are usually offline to protect them from miss use. Typically a Quorum is required to operate them and any activity is recorded in minutes.

5 What are the challenges of a CA?

A CA faces a number of challenges in a PKI system, including security, scalability, reliability, and interoperability. Security is paramount; a CA must protect its private key and certificate database from unauthorized access, modification, or theft. Additionally, it must ensure that its certificates cannot be forged, tampered with, or misused by malicious actors. Scalability is also essential; a CA must be able to handle a large number of requests and validations from different entities and domains. It should also be able to update and distribute certificates in a timely and efficient manner. Reliability is necessary as well; a CA must remain available and accessible at all times without any downtime or disruption. It should also have backup and recovery mechanisms in the event of failure or disaster. Finally, interoperability is key; a CA must be compatible with the standards and protocols of different PKI systems and applications. It should also be able to cooperate with other CAs in either a hierarchical or cross-certified network.

In a previous engagement with a financial institution, we faced the task of ensuring that the CA’s private key was stored in a Hardware Security Module (HSM) to prevent unauthorized access and potential key compromise. Additionally, scalability presented its own challenges as the number of entities requiring certificates grew. We implemented automated solutions and load-balancing mechanisms to handle the influx of certificate requests. Another challenge was ensuring interoperability with third-party CAs, especially in a hybrid environment where cloud and on-prem systems needed to seamlessly integrate. This required the use of standardized protocols, such as OCSP, to ensure real-time certificate validation across multiple platforms.

In environments where certificates were being issued for APIs in a microservices architecture, the need for rapid issuance was critical. However, we had to balance this speed with rigorous validation procedures to ensure that rogue entities could not obtain certificates. Implementing a tiered approach, where lower-risk certificates were issued quickly and higher-risk entities went through enhanced verification, proved effective. Another factor worth considering is the importance of educating users on the role of certificates in secure communication. We conducted internal training sessions for developers, emphasizing the importance of secure certificate handling and the dangers of self-signed certificates in production environments.
