As a robotics team coach for the past 15 years, I have collected numerous anecdotes from our program's alumni regarding the impact of hands-on, project-based learning provided by a rigorous robotics program. A common theme among their stories is, “I had no idea how much I learned on the robotics team until I worked on projects with college students who never”did it." Their advantage in technological proficiency was notable, but the most impactful benefit was in soft skills, including how to attack an open-ended challenge, gather resources, manage a team, resolve issues, and leverage failures to learn and achieve. These students began collecting career-relevant experience in high school and entered the workforce more prepared.

Despite the potential benefits of educational robotics, there are also some challenges that need to be addressed and overcome. For example, the cost and availability of robotics resources and equipment can limit access for some schools, teachers, and students, particularly those in low-income or rural areas. Additionally, teachers may struggle to integrate robotics into their curriculum, instruction, and assessment, as well as manage the classroom dynamics of robotics activities. Furthermore, there may be a need for adjustments or innovations to ensure the relevance and quality of robotics education when aligning it with existing STEM standards. Finally, appropriate and rigorous methods must be developed and implemented to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of robotics on students' learning outcomes.

In my experience, quality professional development to get teachers comfortable integrating robotics is lacking. Many educators do not have a background in robotics, but are open to learning, if given the opportunity.

Robotics technology and software have seen rapid innovation, offering new and improved features, functions, and capabilities such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, internet of things, cloud computing, and virtual reality. Furthermore, collaboration between various stakeholders and actors in educational robotics has enabled the sharing of expertise, resources, and support for the development and dissemination of educational robotics. Additionally, educational robotics is diverse and inclusive, catering to the needs, interests, and backgrounds of different groups of students. Finally, its scalability and sustainability can be expanded and replicated across different levels, contexts, and settings of STEM education.

Additionally, incorporating game elements, scenarios, and environments into robotics activities can increase student engagement. Educational robotics can also be socialized and communicated through online platforms and networks to enable students to interact with other students, teachers, experts, and audiences. Finally, ethicalization and humanization of educational robotics can help students become more aware of the ethical implications of robotics on themselves, others, and the world.

The primary challenge to integrating anything new in education is the why. The why that is never addressed. We are really good at showing how, but too often we hear about a good idea and then focus on finding a way to integrate that good idea (gadget, method, tool, technology...) into education because it is... Well, it just is. This reaction to new ideas has a long and rich history in education. Here's something new (robotics in STEM) so make it work in education. Bring it into our teaching. It will be cool and exciting. However, shouldn't we think of something in education that needs addressing and then look around for possible new solutions instead of seeing a new solution and come up with a problem (whether it exists or not) to fix?
