Gunther Kress has a great theory to help us understand the many facets of multi-modality in Critical Discourse Analysis called: “Multi-Modal Social Semiotic Theory.” This theory helped me understand how language, sign, and symbol inform the way we understand society and culture (embedded in this is power). While society is defined by Kress as the social interactions and power differentials that make up the container for culture, culture is defined as the effects of the products of social actions and social work, whether physical and material or abstract and, for want of a better term, conceptual.

Social media is incredibly reactive and current, which provides a challenge to researchers. So to examine the context, culture and intertextuality of the discourse, the researcher must dedicate as much time to understanding the corresponding current events and trends and re-build a snapshot of the world within which the discourse exists as they do to analysing the content itself. It is also incredibly useful, as in ethnographic study, for the researcher to have a local cultural foundation for the discourse they are analysing, as this comprehension will be of a quality and richness which others struggle to achieve.

Social media texts are also characterized by a high degree of participation and interaction among the users, who can create, share, comment, like, or react to the texts. I completely agree that we must carry out research ethically. However, I would like to address some ethical concerns regarding CDA. In my opinion, social media users are well aware that what they write on social media is accessible to others because the discourse is conducted openly and transparently. As long as we do not conduct direct interviews with those relevant social media users, we can use the database as it is while maintaining respect for those users.
