1 Data volume and complexity

One of the biggest challenges of NTA is dealing with the large and complex amount of data that needs to be collected and processed. Depending on the size and architecture of the network, NTA may require terabytes or even petabytes of storage and computing resources. Moreover, the data may come from different sources, such as routers, switches, firewalls, or endpoints, and have different formats, protocols, and encryption levels. This makes it difficult to correlate and analyze the data in a timely and accurate manner.

This may raise ethical and legal concerns, especially if the data crosses national or organizational boundaries. The ever increasing use of strong encryption makes deep inspection (layer 7) difficult if not impossible. By design encryption hides the data. Analyzing traffic patterns and flows has value but the payload passes with no inspection. SSL decryption allows payload inspection but is costly and not practical in most cases. It is essentially a man-in-the-middle attack. Unless you have control of the endpoints the decryption and re-encryption is detected and flagged. There is no easy solution to this visibility problem.

By time, higher sophistication of cyber attacks, increasing key-sizes for encryption and big-data type of load will lead to requirement of larger BW of the data pipes but most importantly higher processing power at hardware level. I see a future with higher than giga bit WAN connections and multi-multi-processor WAN endpoints across the board.
