Differences exists because different OEMs adopts different device suppliers and different cloud service provides. The standard organizations such as ASAM or SAE or ARAI can step in to define the standard data formats which covers the data piracy, security, regulatory, adaptability and scalability. This will save lot of time spent to redefine and implement new stacks and protocols every time new generation of telematics is developed. This will also have open and secured standards for telematics applications.

First item to be addressed is your potential audience/customer's global location. Most developers adhere to the strictest global standards for data privacy (GDPR) and that will be the "gold" standard for any customer data. In the US the standards for data privacy are not as strict as in the EU (especially in Germany). Development of standards come with a cost and server location is also going to be part of the equation. Know your product roadmap so you can plan for 3-5 years down the road, especially around data privacy and data storage. Thank You

2 Technical issues

Another major barrier to adopting telematics standards is the technical complexity and diversity of telematics systems and devices. There are many different types of telematics hardware, software, and protocols, such as onboard diagnostics (OBD), global positioning system (GPS), cellular, satellite, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. These technologies have different capabilities, limitations, and compatibility issues, which make it difficult to integrate and communicate with each other. Moreover, there is no universal agreement on how to measure and report telematics data, such as driving behavior, fuel consumption, vehicle health, and emissions. This leads to inconsistency and inaccuracy in data quality and analysis.

Start by asking what the definition of a trip is. Yes there are differences in how you obtain vehicle data, e.g. through OBD or fixed-install devices, etc. But understanding how a trip is defined is a good basis to understand the quality of the data.
