What leadership skills are needed to create a culture of accountability in your team?

"communicating the standards and criteria for success".. in my view communication is insufficient unless it leads into BELIEF of the validity of what is being communicated. This is not as easy as it may sound.

Defining expectations has been paramount. In the intricate world of construction and utility, it's critical that everyone knows their role. It's not just about setting goals; it's about setting SMART goals. These specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives act as beacons, guiding the project's course. I've learned that merely assigning tasks isn't enough. Every team member must understand the bigger picture, the standards they're held to, and how their contributions drive success. Through clear communication, I empower my team to track their progress, adjust as necessary, and take pride in their work, knowing they're fulfilling a defined purpose.

Accountability as a hangman's rope encourages escapism amongst the team. Accountability must be with declared intent of being a means of learning and improving, self or enterprise. Except for lapses OR GAINS due integrity, stupidity or lack of application. Not easy as fine line separates genuine learning from the lapses as said above

I've come to deeply value the significance of feedback in shaping a high-performing team. In the dynamic and demanding construction sector, frequent, precise, and constructive feedback isn't just beneficial—it's essential. I've made it a point to ensure feedback I provide is timely, pinpointing specific areas while offering actionable recommendations. But it's not solely about pointing out areas for growth; it's also about recognizing and celebrating achievements, ensuring a balance of commendation and constructive critique. Moreover, in fostering an environment of mutual respect and growth.

Empowerment and ownership is organisational culture with tone set at the top. One of the powerful techniques I found in practice is to resist the temptation to 'teach' colleagues. Ask questions till the closest right line of action is arrived at.

To take it a notch higher, let them lead with complete authority and allow them to hold you responsible for what falls on your shoulders. Create a culture of circular leadership in your teams.

True accountability is intertwined with empowerment. Within world of utility construction, trust isn't just a virtue, it's a necessity. I've always believed in equipping my team with the tools, knowledge, and autonomy they need to excel.
