If you have experience in graphic design, web development, or marketing, you might have some familiarity with visual design, coding, or branding. If you have worked in project management, education, or journalism, you might have skills in communication, collaboration, or storytelling. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses, and highlight the ones that can be useful for UX.

There are a ton of UX designers, researchers, writers, and strategists who took a nontraditional path to get into UX. My background is in editing and Customer Success, but in both roles I found myself thinking about and working for the end user, the customer, and trying to make sure their experience was the best it could be. I had people skills, relationship management skills, and user insight/data analysis skills, and all of these lend themselves naturally to human-centered design thinking. Look through your own skillset and see what tools you may already have in your chest!

2 Learn the basics

The next step is to learn the fundamentals of UX theory and practice. You can do this by taking online courses, reading books and blogs, listening to podcasts, or joining webinars and workshops. There are many resources available for beginners, such as UX Design Essentials by Don Norman, Interaction Design Foundation, UX Planet, and UX Collective. You can also follow some influential UX experts on social media, such as Jakob Nielsen, Steve Krug, Jared Spool, and Leah Buley. The goal is to get familiar with the core concepts, principles, methods, and tools of UX, as well as the different types of UX roles and projects.

There are plenty of low- or no-cost online learning resources, and LinkedIn is a great place to get started finding them. I used a combination of the Google Coursera UX Certificate course and a whole stack of independent reading both online and in books. I recommend picking up the fundamentals from books that are well-loved and well-established (think Norman Nielson group texts), and staying up to date on current trends using Medium and resources you can find posted to LinkedIn listicles.

3 Build a portfolio

The third step is to create a portfolio that showcases your UX work and process. A portfolio is essential for demonstrating your skills, knowledge, and potential to employers and clients.
