1 VR/AR basics

Before you start creating VR/AR content, you need to understand the basics of this technology. VR stands for virtual reality, which simulates a realistic or fictional environment that you can explore and interact with using a headset and controllers. AR stands for augmented reality, which overlays digital elements on top of the real world that you can see through a smartphone, tablet, or glasses. Both VR and AR can create engaging and immersive learning scenarios that can enhance retention, motivation, and performance.

Mixed reality is where real and virtual objects interacts in real time i.e you can interact with them both. This would require some sort of heaset with transparent lens or camera so you can still see the real world. Both the quest3 and Apple Vision Pro supports the Mixed reality interaction as well. In VR you are immersed into the virtual world, in AR you augmented the real world with digital content and in MR, you can involve the real environment for experiences as well. If we were to look at the Virtuality Continuum graph, mixed reality comprises of both the augmented reality and augmented virtuality.

2 Learning objectives and outcomes

As with any instructional design project, you need to define the learning objectives and outcomes of your VR/AR course or module. What do you want your learners to know, do, or feel after completing the VR/AR experience? How will you measure their achievement and progress? How will you align your VR/AR content with the curriculum, standards, and competencies of your target audience? These questions will help you design your VR/AR content with a clear purpose and direction.

yes, you can use VR for storytelling as well, but if you want the learner to be more engaged, make them do something. so when designing for VR learning objectives, think in terms of tasks. What tasks does the learner need to do in this experience to gain the skill? I think action mapping would be great way to start that

5 Tools and platforms

When creating and delivering VR/AR content, you need to choose the right tools and platforms. Depending on your budget, skills, and needs, there are a variety of options available. Unity is a cross-platform game engine that enables you to create 3D and 2D VR/AR content with C# or JavaScript. Unreal Engine is another cross-platform game engine that allows for the creation of high-quality VR/AR content with C++ or Blueprints. Adobe Captivate is an e-learning authoring tool that utilizes 360-degree images and videos to create VR/AR content. Articulate Storyline is another e-learning authoring tool that allows you to create AR content with web objects and triggers. WebXR is a web standard that uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to make VR/AR content. Each tool and platform has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to select the one that best fits your project and goals.

New prototyping tools like Shapes XR and Bezi are great way to create sample prototypes as well .Adobe Aero can be used for the augmented reality prototype designs. Unreal and Unity would be ideal platform to learn if you are serious about VR development. In the web side, Babylon.js and three.js are key players. Besides that you can also use 8th wall for authoring experiences.
