3 VSI methods and tools

VSI is not a single event, but a continuous cycle of planning, doing, checking, and acting (PDCA). To support this cycle, use various methods and tools that help visualize, measure, improve, and sustain the value stream. These include VSM symbols and icons to represent the process steps, inputs, outputs, flows, information, resources, and waste in the value stream. VSM metrics quantify the performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of the value stream. VSM software helps by creating, editing, sharing and updating your value stream maps digitally. Lastly, VSI techniques reduce waste and increase value in the value stream such as 5S, kaizen, kanban, poka-yoke, standard work and visual management.

5 VSI benefits and challenges

VSI can bring many benefits to your organization, such as increased customer value, reduced costs and waste, improved quality and efficiency, and enhanced innovation and agility. However, it also comes with some challenges, such as resistance to change, lack of alignment and support, and complexity and uncertainty. To overcome these challenges, communicate the vision of VSI and involve people in the process. Additionally, create a shared understanding of the value stream, build trust and collaboration among stakeholders, and manage complexity by breaking down the value stream into manageable segments.
