They need to be able to explain the purpose, scope, and benefits of FMEA, elicit and document relevant information, facilitate brainstorming and discussion, resolve conflicts and disagreements, and present and report the findings and recommendations. A FMEA facilitator also needs to listen actively and empathetically, ask open-ended and probing questions, provide constructive feedback, and encourage participation and collaboration.

2 Analytical skills

Another essential skill for a FMEA facilitator is analytical. A FMEA facilitator needs to be able to apply logical and systematic thinking to identify and prioritize the potential failure modes, causes, and effects of a product, process, or system. They need to be familiar with the FMEA methodology, tools, and techniques, such as the FMEA worksheet, the risk priority number (RPN), the failure tree analysis (FTA), and the fault tree analysis (FTA). They need to be able to collect, organize, and interpret data, identify patterns and trends , and draw valid conclusions and recommendations. A FMEA facilitator also needs to be creative and innovative, as they may need to generate and evaluate alternative solutions and scenarios.

A third key skill for a FMEA facilitator is project management. A FMEA facilitator needs to be able to plan, execute, monitor, and control the FMEA project, from defining the objectives and scope, to selecting and managing the team, to allocating and managing the resources, to meeting the deadlines and quality standards. They need to be able to define and communicate the roles and responsibilities of the team members, set and track the milestones and deliverables, manage the risks and issues, and ensure the alignment and integration of the FMEA with other related activities and processes. A FMEA facilitator also needs to be flexible and adaptable, as they may need to adjust and modify the plan and approach according to the changing needs and situations.

4 Technical skills

A fourth important skill for a FMEA facilitator is technical. A FMEA facilitator needs to have a sufficient level of technical knowledge and expertise in the domain of the product, process, or system under analysis. They need to understand the design, function, operation, and performance of the product, process, or system, as well as the relevant standards, regulations, and requirements. They need to be able to use and interpret the technical documents, such as specifications, drawings, diagrams, manuals, and procedures. They need to be able to use and operate the technical equipment, such as software, hardware, instruments, and testing devices.

A fifth vital skill for a FMEA facilitator is leadership. A FMEA facilitator needs to be able to lead and motivate the FMEA team, as well as influence and persuade other stakeholders. They need to have a clear vision and direction for the FMEA project, as well as a strong sense of responsibility and accountability. They need to be able to establish and maintain trust and rapport with the team members and stakeholders, as well as foster a positive and supportive culture. They need to be able to empower and delegate tasks, recognize and reward achievements, and address and overcome challenges.
