Just as with other tasks in running a business, you must make time to extract yourself from the operations and climb high into the strategic mindset. You should schedule yourself quarterly meetings to achieve this, and semi-annual days with your key staff to set new paths and confirm previous directive.

Strategic thinking, leadership skills and a good understanding of organizational behaviour are most important for small business owners. All of the other skills and competencies mentioned in this article are important...but small business owners don't have to be good at them all. They just need to know that they are important and hire people who have these skills! Too many small business owners try to do it all themselves, which only adds stress and prevents them from scaling effectively. Business owners must be freed up to think, observe what is happening in the business and take a proactive approach to business development. They must spend most of their time ON the business as opposed to IN it!

Small businesses have the hardest time staying afloat, but with the right strategies, they can manage to sustain in the long run. 1. Do frequent SWOT analysis of your business offerings. How much do people know of your business or your products/services. 2. Create a solid team of experts (remote or in-person) to align specific tasks better. There will be a cost attached to hiring the best in the industry, but don't stop from investing. 3. Conduct regular market analytics to understand the pulse of the audience. Be relentless in your approach to know what is working and what is not. 4. Prioritize your tasks in 4 blocks to identify the urgent and important ones. This will help build clarity. 5. Don't delay pivots. It helps.

IMHO, here are some 6 key skills and competencies that will help a small business owner to succeed - 1. Business Acumen: Understanding the fundamentals of business, including finance, marketing, and operations. 2. Leadership & Decision-Making: Effectively guiding and motivating teams, making sound decisions, and navigating challenges. 3. Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Clearly conveying ideas, actively listening, and building strong relationships. 4. Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Identifying solutions to problems, adapting to changing circumstances, and embracing innovation. 5. Building a strong Kickass GTM planning and rollout.

Small business owners cannot just think in the here and now. We have to always been projecting ahead. Three, five, ten years out, maybe even more. You have to set your eyes ahead, then march toward that point. Staying in the present limits your growth. It reduces your vision. And THINK BIG! Why set small goals for yourself? Be bold! Imagine what your business and your life look like in three, five and ten years from now. Start making decisions to get there. Also, make yourself an exit plan. "Dying at my desk" is not the way you want to get out of this.

Having owned a small business for 14 years, this is exactly correct. Luck for me my background and former profession was public accounting. I knew the numbers. Most small business owners struggle with the numbers as it’s not their natural strength. My suggestion is hire it out, you can get experienced people on a very small budget. But it pays dividends.

Your business finances are an area that really separates the wheat from chaff. Are you running a business? Or are you just playing? A real business owner understands the need for clear, clean and current financials. They are separate from personal books and they are kept compliant with all Federal and State entities. He realizes that by keeping his finances current, he can steer his ship in the direction he wants it to go. This is 100% necessary when it comes to budgeting, hiring decisions, borrowing, investing, etc. The business owner who is not managing their financials is basically driving while blindfolded. Are they making money? Who knows. Will they owe a lot in taxes? Can't say. Which do you want to be? The choice is clear to me.

How you market is going to depend mostly on your product/service offering. Take me, for example. I am in the accounting, tax and consulting world. For me, email lists, cold calling, paid social media ads, things like that just do not work. In my industry, developing a relationship and establishing trust with potential clients leads to new business. My product is knowledge and expertise. They need to know me first. My marketing style is called "shaking hands and kissing babies" - you can't beat live, in person networking. And if you can't be live, get on Zoom or a video call. Being face-to-face builds trust, and trust will close a deal in any industry.

The first thing that every small business owner must do is setting up a marketing budget! They need to understand that no business can survive without marketing! 10% of total expenses should be devoted to marketing efforts! Brand building is crucial for small businesses!

Leadership and proper management matters, even in a small business. Too often, I think owners believe they are small enough that rules, policies and norms do not, or should not, apply to them. Wrong! The first thing a business should have in place when it comes to setting expectations, providing job descriptions, resolving conflicts, etc. is a policy handbook. If you have a policy, and it is written, you have a guide for everything going forward. Next, invest in your leadership team. We are not born knowing how to manage others, we need to be taught. Get HR training, leadership coaching - it's difference between having unhappy, unengaged employees or a loyal, ready-to-work team. Your team IS your success.

Thinking outside of the box is crucial at times. Covid really made us think differently when we owned our restaurant. There were so many unknowns in the beginning, and we saw what our community and neighbors needed. We became a grocery store for a short time, then began offering packaged meals. We overcame the pandemic by quickly adapting and offering services that were immensely needed. Still gives me goosebumps when I think about some of our customers.

Most small business owners start by doing what they love, but must transition from business operators to business owners. This requires self-reflection and action.

Utilize the 70-20-10 model for employee development: 70% on-the-job, 20% through mentoring, and 10% via formal training. Focus not only on the business and the team but growth for yourself as well.

It all depends on what you want. Do you want to run a small but very profitable business or grow it into an empire. Both are good but both are totally at the end of the spectrum. Having an empire requires a new level of different skill sets like delegation, higher marketing budgets, bigger sales team etc etc Smaller businesses is mostly a life style business.

Beyond the great suggestive points, it if vitally important to you remain agile. Even though the most thoughful planning and execution could run into unforeseen circumstances. You need to be able to be flexible in your walk - don't forge over glass, rock, and lava just because that's what gets to where you planned. There are many ways to reach the same (or highly similar) end goal without being belligerent.

Time to think is extremely important! Business owners must take out 1 hour everyday to think about how to scale their business! This time must be devoted in upgrading skills..

Yes 100% on that,you need to allocate more time because this is important to you or else trust you me it will fail. I personally started a small business while still working a 9-5 job and watched my investment go to drain.
