The Data Product Owner is going to be the heart of this endeavour as he/she will function as a bridge between the tech team and the business departments. I feel that we all know what is key for agile to be successful but it comes down to the question "what is the value you are trying to achieve?" To answer this question, I look at what is really being asked and that is centered around data. You can have a PO that knows all things agile, but they may need help with the data. The key role here is your data experts. They will help drive the agile transformation even if you have a PO that is not voiced in data.

Technical Product Owners are best in this spot. If a PO uses any workload tool they should take some Data Fundamentals course - at the minimum - understand what Excel is and how formulas are traced out. It will help them understand a lot more about the right attributes to configure for measurable values.

An “agile data project management” team is an oxymoron, as it has the words “project management” in it. Given that, Data Architecture skills are different to Data Platform Architecture skills. Ideally there will be a person on the team who has Expert skill levels in both. More likely it will be different individuals who are experts in one of the other.

All members of the data team should ideally have the skills to be able to check data quality. Even better these data tasks should be automated as part of the Information Factory.

This would apply to anything with agile slapped into the title. Otherwise, it’s simply lipstick on a pig.

Back when I was a rookie Machine Learning Engineer, I thought it was all about algorithms and models. But then I met the Data Architect – the unsung hero of our data world. They design the foundation for our data dreams, ensuring it aligns with our goals, standards, and security. They're the guardians of our data castle, guiding us when we need it most. It's not just about algorithms; it's about the architect who sets the stage for our success. They're the real MVPs in our data-driven journey.

Every role that is mentioned and talked about is key, however the buck stops at the agile team. If they are dysfunctional nothing gets done. No delivery happens. Nothing to review, nothing to retrospect. Everyone has a huge responsibility to make sure the team is given clear direction, requirements, capacity, capabilities and autonomy. Then magic happens.
