Additionally, considering the delivery platform (such as television, social media, or digital signage) is crucial as it impacts the design format, resolution, and duration. We tell stories with our designs to keep people interested. we choose colors that make people feel certain ways. Movement makes our designs interesting, and sound effects and music add to the fun. Sometimes, we even make our designs interactive so people can join in the fun too!

Nowadays, newcomers often skip the basics and dive straight into using plugins for fundamental animations like bounce, anticipation, and wiggle. The fundamental technique involves playing with keyframes and working with the graph editor. Once you have a solid grasp of these basics, the next phase is to study the animation type. Understand how it will react in the scene and apply the basic principles of physics in animation, considering factors such as height, weight, density, velocity, anticipation, force, and more.

It goes beyond basic techniques. It's about infusing meaning and emotion through movement, considering rhythm, pacing, and choreography. Deliberate transitions and exploring innovative techniques, such as 3D motion, elevate the storytelling aspect, pushing creative boundaries.

Animation brings motion design to life, imbuing graphic elements with movement, timing, and transitions. key concepts like keyframes, curves, masks, layers, and effects will help to create smooth and realistic animation in your motion design. In addition to this animation principles like easing, anticipation, follow-through, squash and stretch, and overlapping action are a must to learn and master. Easing is like adding a touch of finesse to your animations, smoothing out the transitions between keyframes for a more natural feel. Anticipation is the subtle art of preparing your audience for what's to come, like a gentle wind before a storm, building anticipation and excitement. Follow-through adds realism by ensuring that the motion doesn't stop abruptly, but continues with a natural momentum, like a dancer gracefully finishing a movement. My personal favorite is timing as it plays a critical role in keeping the viewer's attention, which is our most desired result.

For a better understanding of animation principles, I recommend familiarizing yourself with the work of animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their "Twelve basic principles of animation" They were the first to describe and popularize these principles. These are essential foundational knowledge that will make your work captivating and appealing.

Sound and interaction elevate motion design, adding immersion and engagement. Sound enhances visuals with mood, rhythm, and emphasis through music, voice-over, and effects. Interaction empowers viewers with control, creating feedback and responsiveness via buttons, sliders, gestures, and sensors. By integrating these elements, your motion design not only captivates but ensures a compelling and interactive experience, maximizing its impact.

Everyday life gives us natural sound, try to make sound or music that invokes the correct feeling of the viewer. Sounds can also build interactions allowing the user to know they properly clicked a button witha proper feedback sound.

Three good practices to keep in mind: - The audio should enhace the entire product flow, not irritate users; - You can try layering different sounds (whooshes, swishes, risers, impacts for transitions - usually 3 to 4 seconds & beeps, boings, dings, clicks for short action elements, usually 1 to 2 seconds long) with background overlays to provide even deeper, immersive experience; - Always check the license - be sure it's for commercial use. Additionally, you can try creating your own Music & SFX using both software & hardware like Analob Lab, Ableton, MIDI controllers.

Integrating interactive elements empowers viewers to participate actively, fostering a sense of control and agency within the experience. If you're able to add interactivity, 100% always do it. And to ensure a great user experience, anytime there is guest interaction there should be some sort of audio feedback for the user. Even if it is subtle, it helps ground the motion in the space.

To enhance the sensory experience of your animations, I like to experiment with layering different types of sounds—like background music, Sound effects, ambient sounds, voice-over, and interaction sounds. I render my animations in after effects and then do audio editing in audition! Not directly in after effects, because that will really slow your workflow!

Making sure you follow a process and plan before you jump into animation makes iteration much easier. It’s quicker to edit a moodboard or storyboard than it is a polished animation scene. Changes to a project WILL happen - so be prepared for them and keep the client in the loop.

Here’s a list of workflow tips that I think are useful! 1. Structured Feedback Rounds: Define clear stages (concept, design, animation) for specific types of feedback. 2. Feedback Tools: Use platforms like Frame.io or Vimeo for precise, timestamped comments. This is very handy and makes the client happy to keep overview. 3. Set Expectations: Clearly communicate the number of iterations included in your project scope. 4. Regular Check-ins: Schedule frequent updates to discuss progress and collect ongoing feedback. These tips helped me streamline my process, making feedback rounds more manageable and productive.

Get well-versed in receiving and implementing feedback. Listening to feedback (without getting defensive) and applying changes to your work is essential to becoming a great artist. When working for a client and they see you are listening to them and creating a product they love, they will hire you again. Also, some feedback may not make sense. Be sure to clarify with the client or critic. It is great to ask questions!

The first iteration I deliver is mostly for me, to satisfy my creative impulses and deliver the project I want to see. This allows me to remove all ego from the equation. Afterwards, I respond to necessary feedback and deliver what the client wants. I learned a long time ago that often the feedback is good and can help me identify issues I'd never see due to my proximity with the project. Feedback is good, it makes you stronger. Embrace it.

Getting on the same page in terms of needed format(s) & documentation to deliver is essential to begin with. This approach also gives you space to test your work and then refine if needed within the final piece that's going to be implemented, just like Staging & Production.

Starting out in motion design/as a creative, it’s essential to view feedback not as personal criticism but as a valuable part of your growth. Learn to detach from your work and consider feedback objectively. This mindset allows you to take suggestions and criticisms constructively, using them to refine your skills and enhance your projects.
