I'd like to expand on hypothesis testing. Nowadays, it is important to have the ability to run "Design of Experiments". The statistical software allows scientists to maximize the learning with the minimum amount of experimentation. For example, imagine you want to test 3 different variables at levels high and low. If you were to run all the combinations, it would take 8 experiments. While it does not sound too complicated, what happens if there are 5 variables? What if they are 10 variables? It is easy to see that the experiments needed increases exponentially. Using design of experiments, scientists can reduce those numbers of experiments to something that is more manageable and cost-effective to draw conclusions from.

If you’re using DOE methods, just get JMP or Design Expert. It’s not really a discussion. For other methods, the real question isn’t software, it’s why are you using that method. Are you doing t tests for some reason? The answer has nothing to do with software, it’s “don’t”. Don’t do that. Please. Or calculating capability, again the answer is “don’t”. Easy. You might want to hire a statistician at some point to decide what methods to use, to answer the questions you have. You can then decide what software to use.
