In my experience as a security consultant for all sizes of organizations and sectors, more important than templates, is the previous stage where Metrics and Information Gathering are processed, or we can fail in the usual habit of presenting irrelevant data to the stakeholders. Critical thinking, adequate analysis, and understanding the scope of the monitoring, are determinants in providing actionable intelligence for decision-making, as a sample, how many times the employees globally use the MFA to access resources, is just statistics, while time in decommissioning unused accounts from the MFA tool used, present a measurable risk factor and can be translated into financial impact.

Another 2 elements that can be added to the template: 1. Risk Monitoring and Reporting: This section should describe the procedures for monitoring and reporting on risks, including the frequency of reporting and the types of metrics and indicators that will be used to track progress. 2. Risk Governance and Oversight: This section should describe the governance and oversight structures in place to manage risks, including the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders and the processes for decision-making.

Better alternatives to traditional risk reporting methods for companies where I worked included: Decision-focused risk analysis: This involves conducting risk analysis at the time of decision-making, rather than on a periodic basis. It is a more dynamic approach that allows for real-time assessment of risks and their potential impact on specific decisions. Volatility or range scenarios: Instead of expressing the results of risk analysis as arbitrary risk levels, they could be expressed as volatility or range scenarios of the decision/objective itself. This method provides a more detailed understanding of the potential outcomes and their likelihood.

A well-designed risk reporting template and structure are invaluable tools for managing and communicating risk within an organization. They help ensure that risks are identified, assessed, and managed effectively, contributing to the overall resilience and success of the organization.

It’s important for Risk managers to be dynamic about the changing environment. Too often risk reporting becomes a “standardized” process and not responsive to change. So sound risk principles requires one to be dynamic especially when considering tail events and scenario construction

Factor in two more elements disclosing a risk identification study & points for analysis : Quantitative- obviously population size, the #’s ,the hard numeric relative results. Qualitative - it’s an assessment and relevant measurements other than numbers. This is important to a final presentation however be careful not to draw conclusions or fall into a researcher’s biased view. Stick to the facts of the scope of the risk identification.
